PROMOTING THE MOHAWK LANGUAGE IN PRINT AND ONLINE
The Eastern Door is launching a weekly Kanien'kéha (Mohawk) words page - and we need YOUR help!
Sadly, in 2020, and like all Indigenous languages, Kanien'kéha is highly threatened and vulnerable.
With less than 3,500 speakers worldwide, promoting Kanien'kéha is crucial, encouraging others to learn and to teach those around them to reverse the decline.
This project will be focussed on improving and developing vocabulary and language skills for anyone who is eager to participate and help our collective cause.
Our lessons will include specific vocabulary for certain areas of your home
(e.g.: kitchen, bathroom, bedroom; furniture, decor, tools, and many more), which will help readers identify a wide range of objects in Kanien'kéha in their own homes.
We are here to help you develop your vocabulary and improve your knowledge of the language!
Repetitive learning, seeing the words every single day, produces big results. That is our ambitious goal.
It is $1,000 dollars a week to cover the cost of this space in the paper, and we are hopeful to reach this goal, and watch this project flourish.
We have been serving Kahnawake since 1992, and are continuously promoting our language and the health of our community.
In 2012, the Kanien'kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Centre (KOR) launched Kahnawake's Cultural Awareness Month (CAM), and from the beginning, The Eastern Door has been working in collaboration with KOR to help promote Kanien'kéha.
On April 24th of this year, our front page was once again in Kanien'kéha (Vol. 29, No. 17) for the ninth April in a row, since the beginning of CAM.
We have promoted Kanien'kéha through language lessons over the years, and incorporate Kanien'kéha as much as we can, considering heavy time constraints, difficulty getting access to speakers, and high cost of translation.
TED is looking to raise enough money through your patronage, to cover the cost of a weekly space in the paper for our language, and with your support, we can promote Kanien'kéha to a wider audience, at least until the end of 2020 - and hopefully beyond!
We will also post the Kanien'kéha words page online, for wider reach, for those who do not have access to The Eastern Door in print.
This is an example of one of the lessons that will be provided. Your funding will help us create hands-on lessons that will improve your Kanien'kéha skills.
By cutting out the words and placing them on your fridge, labelling items around your home and yard, or even just reading them over regularly, you will strengthen your understanding of Kanien'kéha.
We hope this project will help promote Kanien'kéha and help YOU learn many useful words that are used every day!
We are so grateful for YOU- Niá:wen for your support and let's fight for the language together!
