Protect an open source engineer and his family

Mohammed Abu Matar is a young father of four. As an engineer, he is trained to solve problems with technology. He founded Gaza's first 3D printing company, starting with one device that he then used to print many others. He is one of the most generous persons I have ever met.

محمد أبو مطر شاب وأب لأربعة أطفال، يعمل كمهندس ويقوم بحل المشاكل التقنية. 

قام محمد بتأسيس أول شركة للطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد في غزة، حيث بدأ بجهاز واحد استخدمه بعد ذلك لطباعة العديد من الأجهزة الأخرى، كما أن محمد أحد أكثر الأشخاص كرمًا من الذين قابلتهم في حياتي

This week, I got this message from him:

“I started thinking about leaving Gaza and starting a new life in a new place until things completely stabilize in the Gaza Strip. I think it will take years to recover. The conditions are getting worse day by day and the humanitarian aid that has begun to enter the north is very limited and not sufficient for its purpose. Gaza is no longer livable at all. The war has exhausted all the cash I have and I will not be able to work in these circumstances. Within weeks I lost close friends. They were struggling to survive and I was exchanging ideas and plans with them. I have no one left to lean on now. My company was destroyed twice, in 2021 and 2023. The goal of the campaign is to leave Gaza with my family to a safe place and then establish a new business, rebuilding in Europe or Canada.”

وصلتني هذه الرسالة من محمد قبل أسبوع:

“ لقد بدأت أفكر في مغادرة غزة وبدء حياة جديدة في مكان جديد حتى تستقر الأمور بشكل كامل في قطاع غزة.  أعتقد أن الأمر سيستغرق سنوات للتعافي. إن الأوضاع تزداد سوءاً يوماً بعد يوم، والمساعدات الإنسانية التي بدأت تدخل الشمال محدودة جداً وغير كافية. غزة لم تعد صالحة للعيش على الإطلاق. 

لقد استنفذت الحرب كل أموالي ولن أتمكن من العمل في هذه الظروف، لاسيما أنني فقدت أصدقاء مقربين لي في غضون أسابيع فقط، إنهم كانوا يكافحون من أجل البقاء وكنت أتبادل الأفكار والخطط معهم، لم يبق لي أحد لأستند عليه الآن.

لقد تم تدمير شركتي مرتين، في عامي 2021 و2023، هدفي من الحملة والخروج من غزة مع عائلتي لأبحث عن مكان آمن ومن ثم تأسيس عمل جديد، وإعادة بناء حياتي في أوروبا أو كندا.

I am Lorax Horne, a Canadian journalist who met Mohammed and his wife Ahlam in 2016, when I visited Gaza to attend a conference about the use of free software and hardware in healthcare. Mohammed helped organize this conference, as well as arranging my visa in the country. Ahlam cooked maklouba for me while I was a guest in their city, and Mohammed introduced me to the doctors, engineers, journalists, and English students who would become my guides and interpreters those weeks. We stayed in touch over the years, and now it is my privilege to try to extend some hospitality back to this family. I am collecting money in my personal account in Canada, and sending it via Western Union or Moneygram directly to my friends who are in need. If necessary, I will fly to Cairo with funds raised here to help to broker the evacuation with the Egyptian side.

The funds raised here will be used to:

أنا لوراكس هورن، أعمل في مجال الصحافة في كندا، التقيت بمحمد وزوجته "أحلام" عام 2016، عندما زرت غزة لحضور مؤتمر حول استخدام البرمجيات والأجهزة المجانية في الرعاية الصحية.

ساعدني محمد في تنظيم هذا المؤتمر، بالإضافة إلى مساعدته لي في الحصول على تأشيرتي إلى البلاد، كما قامت أحلام بطهي المقلوبة لي عندما كنت في مدينتهم، وقد عرفني محمد على عدد من الأطباء والمهندسين والصحفيين وطلاب اللغة الإنجليزية الذين ساعدوني كمرشدين ومترجمين لي في تلك الأسابيع.

لقد بقينا على اتصال على مر السنين، والآن يشرفني أن أحاول تقديم المساعدة لهذه العائلة.

لذلك أقوم بجمع الأموال من خلال حسابي الشخصي في كندا، وأرسلها عبر ويسترن يونيون Western Union"" أو الموني غرام "Moneygram" مباشرة إلى أصدقائي المحتاجين. إن لزم الأمر، سأسافر إلى القاهرة بالأموال التي تم جمعها هنا للمساعدة في عملية التنسيق مع الجانب المصري، حيث سيتم استخدام الأموال التي تم جمعها من أجل:

- تلبية الاحتياجات الأساسية لعائلة أبو مطر مثل الطعام، الماء، الأغطية، والخيام.

- إجلاء عائلة أبو مطر بأمان إلى مصر.

- سيكلف عبور الحدود المصرية ما لا يقل عن 5000 دولار أمريكي لكل شخص بالغ و2500 دولار أمريكي لكل طفل.

دفع تكاليف العبور من خلال الحدود إلى القاهرة وتأشيرات الخروج لمحمد أبو مطر(37 عامًا) وزوجته أحلام (33 عامًا) وأطفالهما الأربعة هالة (14 عامًا)، يوسف (12عاماً)، جوري ( 7عاماً)، وليليا (3أعوام).

سيتم استخدام أي أموال إضافية يتم جمعها لتغطية نفقات معيشتهم في مصر، وتذاكر الطائرة إلى وجهتهم النهائية بعد مصر.

More about Mohammed and Tashkeel 3D

For years Mohammed was collaborating with others to produce high quality medical devices, and distributing supplies to paramedics and emergency room doctors. Their prototype of a low cost 3D-printed stethoscope has been used by the local Ministry of Health as well as governments in other countries to deliver working medical technology at a fraction of the cost of commercial devices. They saved lives by inventing low-cost tourniquets that were used during the Great March of Return.

ضافةً إلى عمل محمد أبو مطر في مجال الطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد، كان محمد يتعاون مع مختصين لإنتاج أجهزة طبية عالية الجودة، وتوزيع الإمدادات على المسعفين الطبيين وأطباء الطوارئ.

كما أنه تم استخدام النموذج الأولي (الذي عمل عليه محمد) لسماعة طبية منخفضة التكلفة مطبوعة بتقنية ثلاثية الأبعاد من قبل وزارة الصحة المحلية وكذلك الحكومات في بلدان أخرى لإيصال التكنولوجيا للمحتاجين بأقل تكلفة ممكنة.

كما و ساهم في إنقاذ العديد من الأرواح من خلال اختراع سدادة أوردة منخفضة التكلفة تم استخدامها خلال مسيرة العودة الكبرى.

During the start of the COVID pandemic, his workshop began to produce PPE . His company innovatively used 3D printers, beating the blockade by using new technology and supplying hospitals and primary care providers, as well as Doctors Without Borders.

في بداية جائحة كوفيد " كورونا"، بدأت ورشته بإنتاج معدات الوقاية الشخصية، حيث استخدمت شركته الطابعات ثلاثية الأبعاد بشكل مبتكر، فتغلبت على الحصار باستخدام التكنولوجيا الجديدة وتزويد المستشفيات ومقدمي الرعاية الأولية ومنظمة أطباء بلا حدود.
