Protect Our Frontline

Donation protected
WE NEED HELP. And a lot of it. Many of our frontline teams are without adequate protection…some with no protection at all. It’s not only frightening, it’s unacceptable! This past week we have gotten news of two of our emergency doctors are in critical condition due to COVID infection. One is a male in his 40s in Washington state, another a male in his 70s in New Jersey. There have been so many reports of the likely increased risk of repeated exposure, that healthcare workers are getting sicker because they are being exposed more frequently and in more dangerous situations (intubation, bagging, application of high flow oxygen, nebulization of medications, positive pressure ventilation such as BiPAP). These are all things we cannot stop doing in the management of a virus that causes respiratory illness. Yet all across the nation, in some of the smallest and largest healthcare networks, those showing up are being asked to do so unprotected.

I vowed to protect the anonymity of those contacting me, so if you see your details here, don’t worry, I will keep that promise. In the past 24 hours I have had hundreds of emergency doctors and nurses reach out to me and describe their critical need, and how they are being advised to handle it. Some of the most terrifying examples-A site with no face masks advised their employees to go home and watch YouTube videos to figure out how to “craft their own mask." Another site was told to use a washcloth on a string. One site ran out of basic surgical masks last week, and there is no plan to get more. Countless sites have told me they have 5-10 boxes of masks for the ENTIRE HOSPITAL. One doctor told me she has been using the same mask for 2 MONTHS. Many nurses have told me they have no masks at all. The CDC is adjusting guidelines and recommendations daily. They are clearly trying to find a way to work within the supply that we have, but too many hospitals can’t even meet the BASIC standard. Some people are even being told they are not allowed to wear a mask. THIS. IS. NOT. OK.
WE DESERVE BETTER.  We deserve to work with basic protection.  We can debate all day long about who’s responsibility this is, and why it’s so wrong that we are having to get our own PPE.  But that debate is for later.  Right now we need action and PROTECTION, no matter who’s responsibility it SHOULD be.

So I’m asking for help.  I can’t do this alone.  I’m asking for both financial and material help.  If you have supplies that can be shipped, please contact me so I can connect you with those in need.  If you can financially assist purchase of supplies, please consider.  100% of products and funds will be used to help protect our healthcare force.  To keep it strong we need to keep it safe.

Thank you!
