Join us in preserving the majestic manta rays of Kona, Hawaii. Manta Pacific Research Foundation (MPRF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the education, research, and conservation of manta rays. Your support will help us protect these incredible creatures and their habitat, ensuring they thrive for generations to come.
At Manta Pacific Research Foundation, our mission is to study and conserve the manta rays of Kona, Hawaii. Founded in 2002, we have worked tirelessly to understand these gentle giants and educate the public about their importance to the marine ecosystem.
We are proud to share a significant milestone in our conservation efforts. On June 5, 2009, Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle signed Act 092(09), making it illegal to kill or capture manta rays in Hawaii. This landmark legislation was a direct result of our advocacy efforts, including a petition organized on our foundation's website starting in 2006. This achievement underscores the impact we can make when we come together for a common cause.
Right now, we are seeking to raise $5,000 to fund our ongoing research, conservation efforts, and educational programs. These funds will go directly towards:
- **Research**: Conducting vital studies on manta ray behavior, migration patterns, and genetic diversity.
- **Conservation**: Implementing effective strategies to minimize human impact on manta ray habitats and advocating for their protection through policy change.
- **Education**: Engaging with local communities, schools, and tourists to raise awareness about the importance of manta ray conservation. This includes a Manta Ray Naturalist course that educates students on the ecology and physiology of mantas, as well as how to interact appropriately with mantas in the ocean.
For example, $100 can support a day of field research. $250 can fund a local school’s educational workshop, and $1,000 can provide essential research equipment.
Together, we can ensure that these magnificent creatures continue to grace our oceans for years to come.
We can't do this without you. Please consider donating today and sharing our campaign with your friends and family. Your support will make a world of difference in our efforts to conserve manta rays and their habitat.
Meet "Lefty!" Lefty was the first manta ray named because her floppy left cephalic fin made her easy to pick out of a crowd. When uncurled, the fin sometimes hangs down and almost looks normal, but other times it flops into her mouth channeling food and water away from her mouth instead of into it. Manta Pacific Research Foundation would like to include Lefty in their growth rate study to determine if being feeding challenged is hampering her growth and development. However, with an ~ 12' wingspan this 35 year old manta ray seems to be holding her own very well.
