Protect Reiki! Reiki Unified Capital Campaign

Reiki Unified is a nonprofit organization* dedicated to uniting the U.S. Reiki community and spearheading a national movement to protect Reiki practice from local and state licensing. Reiki Unified serves as an educational resource and provides free downloadable materials. Our goal is helping practitioners continue to practice Reiki freely in their states and local communities.
We’re launching a GoFundMe campaign to maintain our website and social media presence and develop educational and organizing materials. The volunteer board has covered the costs of running Reiki Unified with our own money. We’re asking you to help fund our mission. We’re grateful for offerings of any size.
We need to protect Reiki from regulation because:
- Reiki is a spiritual practice that is non-invasive and individualized to each practitioner's style and way of teaching. Regulation would inhibit practitioners’ autonomy to practice freely.
- The most frequent reason given for licensing Reiki is to stop human trafficking. Research from the past fifteen years shows not a single case of a Reiki practitioner convicted of human trafficking.
- There are more than 150 styles of Reiki practice. Reducing these to a single mandated form of practice disrespects the way Reiki is passed from teacher to student and would destroy its diversity.
- Licensing bills often require Reiki practitioners and teachers to be governed by the massage therapy industry and adhere to standards and practices that have no relationship to the teaching and practice of Reiki. This places an extreme and unfair burden on Reiki practitioners, spending thousands of dollars to enroll in, pay for, and complete unnecessary training. It is similar to having an electrician meet the standards of a plumber.
- Licensing Reiki requires additional educational training, certification, and licensing and prevents practitioners from practicing a profession that already has specialized training. This requirement creates a barrier for the public and will deprive access to beneficial services provided by qualified professionals. In addition, licensing fees for educational programs force many teachers out of practice and create a shortage of volunteers in hospitals and hospice programs. Licensing will reduce the number of practitioners, increase fees, and further reduce access to care.
