Protsenko Family

Donation protected
Mykyta (Nikita) Protsenko came to Canada from Ukraine three years ago as an eager young hockey player. He left his family and friends, hoping for a chance to see the world and improve as an athlete. There was no way to foresee what he was leaving behind, or for how long.

Nikita was left stranded in Canada due to the COVID pandemic, and has been staying with a teammate's family, the Gourley's. As the pandemic slowed, his hopes to return home to Kyiv were once again derailed - this time by a Russian invasion of his homeland.

Nikita had to watch helplessly from afar as his country was attacked and his family was forced to flee from their home. His mother, Natalia, and his 16-year-old sister Anna, left their their home to hide in a family friend's basement with a group of friends and family when the war broke out.  She had to drive back to Kyiv to get her mother and bring her to the basement with them.  Then after hiding in the basement for 2 weeks, they caught a ride with a group of women and children to the Polish border.  There was no room in the vehicle to bring any belongings, they fled with nothing but the clothes on their backs.  Unfortunately, they could not convince the grandmother to flee with them.  Because of a flat tire, they were forced to drive through the night.   Breaking the curfew meant that they were at risk of being shot by soldiers but they had no safe place to stop.  They managed to reach Poland and were able to let Nikita know that they were safe. When Nikita heard from them, he asked his Canadian friends to help him to help his family.

With your help, Nikita will be able to see his family again very soon.

Natalia and Anya are in the process of getting their visas  which will allow them to come to Canada. We will be arranging travel to Edmonton soon.  As happy as we are that they have a safe place to stay, we recognise how difficult this move will be for them. Neither Natalia or Anya speak much English, and it will take time for them to get used to life in Canada. They have left behind their country, their culture, their friends, their home, their belongings, and their entire lives. In Ukraine, Natalia worked for news company as a personal assistant.  Anya was attending high high school and after schools she took part in a Ukrainian National music and dance performance program.  In Canada, Natalia is hoping to find a job to support the family, and Anya will be attending a high school.

All of the money raised in this GoFundMe will go towards helping the family to settle here. It will help to secure a place to live together as a family once again. Your donations will make sure they have the essentials such as food and clothing; and it will help to pay for their utilities and other bills to start them out in Canada.

We are working with the local community to welcome this family to our city, and we are doing everything we can to make the transition as smooth as possible. We humbly ask that you help the Protsenko family by giving what you can, and welcoming them to Canada.

Thank you for your consideration, and your donations. дякую за допомогу родині Проценкo !
