Provide free education to India's rural poor
Donation protected
During the peak of the COVID lockdown, 'Kaikala Chetana', a community-run, volunteer-based education program for India's rural poor, was struck by cyclone Amphan, destroying houses, crops and agricultural equipment upon which the Kaikala region depends. It was the strongest tropical cyclone to strike the Ganges Delta since 2007 and the first super cyclonic storm to have formed in the Bay of Bengal since 1999.
In response to this tragic event, the Oh India photo project has been reignited to raise money for the restoration of the village and to ensure the continuation of the education program.
Kaikala Chetana - roughly translated to Kaikala awareness - is a childrens activity centre and education program. Founded in 1996 by a group of local social activists fed up with the lack of inclusive education for the rural poor, the program now provides free education to over 1000 children across 30 locations throughout the Kaikala region.
Upon my travels, I had the fortune to visit Kaikala Chetana. Inspired by its inclusive vision and witnessing first-hand the communal value of the work, the ‘Oh India’ project was created to raise money through photography to support them.
