Equip Wiltshire’s Badger Patrollers

Donation protected

The Badger Cull
It’s that time of the year again when tragically Wiltshire's badgers are the innocent victims of an inept government response, alongside appalling practises in the dairy and beef industry, to deal with the bovine TB issue in many herds across the county.

This fund raiser is aiming to raise funds to provide more Thermal Imaging (TI)  equipment for our patrols to aid them in their aim to stop our badgers being shot by cull operatives. TI is used to spot shooters and any illegal activity, as help find wounded badgers during the night.

Current Situation
This year (2020) saw a new licence issued, covering the south east of the county and into Hampshire. This new zone now makes the sixth and final zone - meaning the entire county is now within a cull zone.

Our appeals for patrollers and sett surveyors this year, despite the ongoing Covid-19 situation, yielded a magnificent response. We now have many more “boots in the field” and we thank each and every one of you for your support so far. More details of how you can help and the work we do are given below.

As we now have multiple patrols every night, it would be wonderful to equip each patrol with the equipment needed to be as effective as possible. Patrollers already arrive with their own torches, batteries, hi-viz etc, but what really helps is using Thermal Imaging (TI) equipment. This enables patrollers to spot cullers with their rifles hiding in the darkness, as well as the more welcome sight of our wildlife.

Equipment Needed
Equipment such as this doesn't come cheap, and as with everything the more you spend the better and more reliable it will be. Prices start in the hundreds of pounds and go up to the thousands - but I think this is a little out of our price range! We have set up this fund raiser, and as soon as we have enough we will be equipping our patrols to enable them to be as effective as possible to save our County’s innocent badgers.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

About Wiltshire Against the Badger Cull
Wiltshire Against the Badger Cull primarily is for organising “Badger Patrols” - which are small groups of people who legally walk public footpaths in the evening after dusk close to setts we are protecting. Our patrollers are fully visible with high-vis vests and torches and the walks are conducted peacefully and legally with the full knowledge of the police (although we don’t specify our routes). We may also undertake other forms of protest as and when required, for those who may want to do so.

So, how you can help -

1). Find your local setts - we have a video on our Facebook page which helps with learning how to find and identify Badger setts and how to get the details to us (we keep a database of all the Badger setts in the county we know about, which helps us protect them during the cull).

2). You don’t have to be part of an “organised patrol”, we actively encourage and support individuals, couples, families or groups of friends to protect their local setts in a similar way to our organised patrols. We can support you with this too. Send us a DM if you would like to look after your local sett but need some advice or support.

3). Join our organised patrols. We have small patrols in many areas who do exactly this. If you prefer we can link you up with other local people like yourself who want to protect local badgers. Generally speaking we have completed training for our patrollers for this years cull, but we would be happy to arrange for you to get out with an experienced patroller who can show you what we do. There really isn’t much too it, but we appreciate some people would just like that extra bit of guidance.

4). If you can’t get out you can send a donation, write to the local papers, contact your MP - anything to spread the word that badgers are being culled in Wiltshire now.
