PS 19 School Climbing Wall!!

As a climber and a coach, I have witnessed the profound impact that climbing can have on kids and adults alike. It offers an incredibly unique opportunity to learn problem solving, teamwork, and decision making -- all while having fun and getting exercise. Unfortunately, climbing is often very inaccessible for reasons that include geographic location, time constraints, and economic ability. This fundraiser is an effort to begin to close that accessibility gap and bring climbing to PS 19 Queens, a school with over 2,000 kids -- the most overcrowded school in New York City.
In spite of overcrowding, the teachers at PS19Q work tirelessly to give each student every opportunity they can. I've had the chance to partner with one such teacher, Ben S., a physical education teacher, to help expand an adventure curriculum that Ben has been developing over the past few years.
Using the resources available to him, Ben has built makeshift skis, kayaks, and an island hopping game in an effort to give his students the same opportunities as kids in areas where outdoor adventure may be more readily available. The curriculum also includes a small, well-received climbing segment. But with only a tiny portion of wall, it's limited in the effect it could have. Now, we are working together to bring a complete school climbing wall to PS19Q!
There are few things as special as the opportunity to share what you love with a younger generation, and I feel confident that as a community we can raise the funds and give thousands of children the opportunity to learn and grow through physical activity!
WHAT THE WALL IS:
• From Everlast Climbing, a company that specializes in easy-to-install school climbing walls.
• It will (hopefully!) be 8 feet tall and 16 feet long
• It has magnetic panels, allowing students to participate in cross-curricular activities like word spelling, and math magnets.
• It will have miniature crash pads made specifically for this wall, in order to ensure the kids' safety.
WHAT $2,900 WILL GET US:
• The Wall
• Holds
• Magnets
• Mounting System
• Crash Pads
• Any extra money will be invested in additional supplies to expand Ben's adventure curriculum!
Finally, as a celebration of climbing and adventure in NYC, The Cliffs at LIC has offered to let us use the gym to throw an end of the year climbing and pizza party for the kids at PS19Q. It's going to be an awesome way to celebrate the fundraiser, as well as kick start the kid's excitement for climbing :)
