Psych Dog Charlotte is a non-profit company started to raise the awareness and assist in finding information on Psychiatric Service Dogs, the tasks dogs can be trained to do, the legal qualification of a "Service Dog" compared to a "therapy dog", and provide other resources for the public, patients and physicians to use dogs to assist those diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses or Autism and give businesses information on the Federal Laws regarding admitting Psychiatric Service Dogs into their establishments. We work to place dogs and provide funding for psyciatric service dog training for those who may not otherwise be able to afford it so that they may be helped and change their lives for the better. Formed in September 2011 and first reported on by Morgan Fogarty of FOX Charlotte, Psych Dog Charlotte is dedicated to helping improve the lives of individuals with severe mental illnesses from depression and anxiety all the way up to PTSD, multiple personality disorder (now called Dissociative Identity Disorder) and schizophrenia by providing information, resources and service dogs for those patients free of cost to them.
Research has clearly shown that having a psychiatric service dog prescribed by a physician can drastically improve the life of those with mental illnesses. Everyone feels so much better when they come home and have the dog waiting for them, ready to love on them, right? Imagine how helpful it is for someone with a mental illness to feel that love 24/7/365 and to have that dog help them calm down quicker from a panic attack than from taking the fastest acting medication. Imagine how it can help someone suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder feel "grounded" when they are having flashbacks, don't feel real (dissociating) and are immobilized with fear yet knowing help is right there because their service dog has been trained to calm them down, give them situation awareness or being drained to get them some medication. These are just some of the tasks that these amazing dogs can be trained to do in order to help their handler.
While our name is Psych Dog Charlotte, we have helped place dogs all the way to Seattle, Albuquerque, Baltimore and San Antonio as well as here in our local Charlotte area. We are solely funded by YOU and we need your help in order to help those looking for our help.
Currently we are having our first fundraising drive. Have had one fundraising drive when we first started the charity and it was a huge success. Now that our economy is not doing well, we simply cannot afford the cost to put on a fundraiser and believe that the money spent on holding one would be better served going straight to use for the charity. As stated earlier, we are are solely funded by you and need your help. There is no donation amount that is too small or too big. Not only that, we would very much appreciate your support in helping us obtain sponsorship or funding by any corporate partner that you could introduce us to. Without you, our dream to help the lives of your family, friends or neighbors will not be able to be fulfilled.
