Nobody saw it coming.

He was doing his favorite thing in the world when it happened, visiting with friends and neighbors in the street outside his home one April evening. As the group broke up and headed in for the night, he fell. In less than 48 hours, he was gone.

My name is India Allen, and I’m Paul Tunnell’s only daughter. I have created this GoFundMe page to raise funds to cover his medical bills and final expenses, and if we make it that far, I would surely welcome help paying down the lien on the family house. Everyone who has ever visited has wondered at the peacefulness of the place. It's a sanctuary in the city. And everyone my dad ever met has always been welcome there. My goal is to keep it in the family and pass it on to his grandsons.

My dad was a man with a big heart but little means. He would often run errands for friends and even shared his home with strangers he met on the street who were down on their luck. He loved a nifty gadget but was not attached to material things. If you needed something and he had it, it was yours. If you were broke and he had a couple bucks, he’d help you out. If you needed a ride or a place to stay, he’d grab his keys or offer his couch.

A few years before his final fall, he had a minor stroke which resulted in a decline in mobility and the onset of dementia. The City of Denton offered a HUD program that renovated homes for elderly and disabled residents. As long as he lived in his home, his monthly payments were forgiven. At the time of his passing, he owed $72k on the house, which is now a debt owed by his estate and, ultimately, his heir. I don’t want to lose the home where he and his siblings spent many of their formative years just to pay off his final bills.
