Help Save P&T Surplus - Round 2!

P&T Surplus is everybody's favorite store in Kingston. I'm Tim Smythe Jr., co-owner of P&T for more than 20 years, and we hear our customers, new and old, say that every day. It's true—whether you're a homeowner doing home improvements, a mechanic looking for a hard-to-find screw, an artist scouring the place for inspiration, or someone looking to upgrade their home computer, P&T is the place to go. And it will never hurt your pocketbook. My father, Tim Sr., has been serving his customers for more than 60 years! He first started working at what was P&D Surplus when he was 17 years old. Throughout the day, I can routinely hear him telling customers, "put that in your pocket, we'll get you next time," meaning that he's giving to them for free. He does this despite the fact that neither of us is currently making any income. The customers love my dad, and his generosity is legendary. But this generosity has its price.

A couple of years ago, we launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to keep P&T Surplus from going under. At that time, we faced a financial storm, owing federal, state, land, and school taxes, as well as rent and electricity bills. Our only hope was a last-ditch effort to raise $25,000. Thanks to the heroic generosity of our customers and community, we met our goal!

However, something unexpected blindsided us. Shortly after reaching our goal, the New York State Department of Taxation seized by levy the entire balance of our bank account. This happened before we had a chance to negotiate and allocate the funds the way we wanted to. It was devastating. While this action mostly covered our state taxes, it left us without funds for other critical expenses such as electricity, remaining taxes, inventory, and my father's medical bills, which remained unpaid.

Today, we are in a much better place than we were a couple of years ago, but we are still short about $15,000, which is basically the amount the state seized from our checking account. This money would allow us to finally catch up on the remaining tax debt, keep our electricity on, and buy some much-needed merchandise to keep the store afloat.
