Helping Alicia heal

Hello everyone and thank you so much for reading this. This is something I never thought I would be writing and yet, here I am. Alicia McKinnon is a mother of 4 children. If you know Alicia, you know that she is a HARD worker. You know she does everything she can to support her children. She does get child support but that doesn't come close to covering the needs of the family. Alicia is a CNA and she has been accepted into a nursing program this fall. In order to spend more time with her kids, she needs a job where she can earn more money an hour. Alicia started having gall bladder attacks. Hoping she could control the attacks through diet, she suffered through them. Finally, a flare-up sent her to the hospital where she was told it was time for surgery. She had to notify her employer and make arrangements for childcare but a couple of days later, on May 7th, Alicia checked into Good Samaritan Hospital to have her gall bladder removed.
Gall bladder surgery is routine, we were told it was a 45 minute procedure. After sitting in the waiting room for 3 plus hours, the doctor finally came out to give us an update. He explained Alicia's gall bladder was quite large making for a difficult surgery. He said that he had inadvertently sliced her liver. He added there was some blood loss but it was no big deal and she be all set for discharge the following day. The next day came and went. Instead of being discharged, Alicia spent the next 4 days in constant pain in the Good Samaritan hospital. When she was sent home, it was with basic care instructions. With each passing day, Alicia's pain was getting worse. Her abdomen swelled to the size of a second trimester pregnancy. She was experiencing shortness of breath. Knowing there was something drastically wrong, she went back to her doctor ON TWO OCCASIONS. Both times she was told that her severely bloated belly and difficulty breathing were NORMAL following surgery. He made this diagnosis without running any tests or doing any scans. Finally, on May 18, Alicia listened to her body and went to the Beth Israel Plymouth for a second option and thank God she did. She was immediately transported to the Beth Israel Boston where they discovered internal bleeding. She received a liter of blood to replace the large amount of blood found around her liver. One bile duct had a hole in it and the others were blocked. They had to insert 4 drains to eliminate the fluid. Once the fluid is gone, they have to find and repair the leak.
The doctors are very optimistic that they will remedy Alicia's issues and have her back home with her family in a week or so. The problem is she will be sent home with the drains so she will need follow up visits and require rest to heal. She will be out of work for several months.
Since I’ve know Alicia she has always had a full time job and picked up any extra shift available. She has always worked a MINIMUM of 40 hours. She is completely responsibility for her children and has never asked for a handout. I have set up this page for Alicia because I know the reality of what's ahead. Alicia will not be eligible for unemployment, she does not have disability insurance. With child support as her only income, Alicia will be able to feed her kids but that's about it. She won't have the money to keep up with basic monthly bills. On top of those bills, Alicia will need help around the house. She won't be able to prepare meals or do laundry, she won't be able to drive at all.
Thankfully, this is a temporary situation and with God's grace, Alicia will be whole again in a few months. In the meantime, I'm asking for your help to keep her family afloat. No amount is too small, anything you can do to help her through this difficult time will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
