Hi,
My name is Ed Shiller, founder and publisher of Yorkland Publishing. I started this GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to market our latest release: Visions of Hope: Running Towards My Own Truth, by Jason Dunkerley.
We need additional operating capital to implement campaigns that will focus public attention on Jason's inspiring story. Your donation will help pay for advertising, launches, book tours, and similar marketing and sales opportunities.
Visionof Hope is an uplifting autobiography of a world-class athlete, blind from birth with a congenital eye condition, who achieved international acclaim as a five-time Paralympic middle-distance runner and five-time medalist.
In telling his story, Jason introduces the reader to the behind-the-scenes intricacies of top-tier athletics: the rigours of intensive training; the building of rapport among athlete, guide and coach; the development and implementation of winning strategies; the never-ending struggle to excel; the searing letdown of defeat; and the euphoric triumph of victory.
Bruce Kidd, a fabled Canadian Olympian and Professor Emeritus of Sport Politics and Policy at the University of Toronto, called Visions of Hope “an insightful, at times poetic, account of the life of a Canadian Paralympian. . . . It’s a moving and courageous story.”
Jason never let his lack of sight diminish his drive to live life to the fullest or prevent him from developing his innate athletic talent while also inspiring others, regardless of their abilities, to achieve personal fulfillment through sport. And he never let the demands of his 25-year career as an athlete diminish his devotion to those in need, even to the point of donating a kidney to his ailing wife.
Jason grew up in Northern Ireland with two brothers, who were also visually impaired, and a fully sighted sister. Encouragement from his parents to play outside just like other children, and support from elementary school teachers as he played a variety of sports instilled the love for physical activity that endures as a defining part of his life.
When he was thirteen, Jason immigrated with his family to Canada and attended the W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind in Brantford, Ontario, where students were encouraged to participate in sports. Jason was drawn to middle-distance running. After graduating from high school, Jason enrolled in the University of Guelph, where the increased level of training enabled him to qualify for his first national team - and he never looked back.
