Denton Immigrants Need Us/Denton Immigrants, We See Your Needs
National Crisis
4 million hard working immigrant taxpayers who don’t have a social security and 5 million U.S. citizen children with undocumented parents are left behind by federal and local responses to the economic and social effects of this pandemic. According to the Pew Research Center about half, 49% of U.S. Hispanics, in comparison to 33% of U.S. adults, say that they or someone in their household lost or took a pay-cut as a result of COVID-19.
An Invisible Population
It is hard to tell how many undocumented immigrant families call Denton home. What’s certain is that there are hundreds, if not thousands of our neighbors whom we rely on to meet custodial and maintenance needs, help build our city, and run and support our service industries. Undocumented families are urgently trying to meet their basic needs and anxiously scrambling to find money to pay the rent, utilities, and medical bills.
They help around our city, yet they don’t qualify for local relief offered to other Denton residents, despite them subsidizing programs and services with their own tax contributions.
We also know that undocumented immigrants in the North Texas area are afraid because of immigration raids, highest rates of immigration detentions, and the threat of deportation. We don’t know who they are because revealing their status can have devastating consequences. Being invisible helps undocumented families stay safe, but in moments of crisis being invisible has devastating consequences.
Seeing the Need And Supporting Our Undocumented Neighbors
This stimulus package excludes people like Esperanza. Esperanza just had her baby last Sunday by way of C-section, and her husband, a DACA recipient, has been without work for 3 weeks due to Covid19. Together they have 7 children, and there is no return date for when she’ll be able to go back to work, leaving the family without any income.
We were informed of another family who is suffering a lot. They have 3 children, and their father, Jesus, has been sick for a few weeks and spends a lot of time at the hospital. This has made it difficult for him to find and keep work, and they have had to move often because they can’t pay the rent. They need help with food and to pay for prescription medicine.
Another young lady, Luz, abused by her husband, ended up with Friends of the Family. She has since been placed in an apartment, but the $1250 rent is difficult to pay. She often needs to work cleaning homes, in order to support 3 children but that work is no longer available due to Covid19.

We are asking for you to see our undocumented neighbors and help us by lifting the shadow that fear casts on their urgent needs. We are counting on your generosity as Dentonites to include families that are left behind by federal and local support initiatives by contributing to this fundraiser so that they, like the thousands of Dentonites affected by this pandemic, can cover the costs of rent, utilities, food and other basic necessities.
