Puenting para recaudar fondos para DiabetesCERO

Hola, soy Michael Olsson, auxiliar de óptica en Specsavers Ópticas Guardamar y me voy a enfrentar al desafío de hacer puenting desde los puentes del Mascarat para recaudar fondos para la fundación DiabetesCERO.

He estado preparándome para este reto haciendo caminatas, vías ferrata y escalando montañas, y no he dejado de preguntarme lo qué se sentiría al caer. Pero, en lugar de dejar que eso me detenga, he decidido enfrentar mi miedo y comprometerme a realizar el único salto de puenting entre dos puentes en España, por una maravillosa causa que me llega directamente al corazón.

Saltaré desde 60 metros y experimentaré una caída libre de 40 metros, antes de balancearme entre los dos puentes. Saltaré con Alicante Aventura, una empresa fantástica con la que ya he realizado muchas actividades y en la que confío.

La empresa para la que trabajo, Specsavers Ópticas, ha firmado un acuerdo para recaudar fondos para la ONG DiabetesCERO durante todo el año 2024 y ayudarles a encontrar una cura para la Diabetes tipo 1. Su objetivo es recaudar más de 5.000€ para financiar importantes proyectos de investigación en España en busca de una cura.

Con mi salto de puenting, quiero recaudar 1.000€ de ese total en nombre de Specsavers Ópticas Guardamar, Torrevieja y La Zenia. Poder recaudar dinero para una causa increíble con esta acción es una verdadera motivación para enfrentar mi miedo y dar ese salto de fe.

Recaudar fondos para la investigación de la diabetes es muy importante, y algo que me toca muy de cerca, ya que un miembro de mi familia la padece y he visto los efectos que la diabetes puede tener en un ser querido. El gran trabajo que realiza esta ONG merece ser más conocido, y quiero crear conciencia no solo sobre la diabetes, sino sobre lo que puede suceder a los afectados más adelante si la enfermedad no se controla adecuadamente.

La diabetes no es solo un problema de glucosa o insulina, puede causar muchos más problemas y lamentablemente lo hemos visto en nuestra familia. Cuanta más financiación se pueda destinar a la investigación para encontrar una cura y mejorar el tratamiento, mejor. También es muy importante difundir el impacto de la diabetes en la salud, ya que el diagnóstico y tratamiento precoces son cruciales para reducir el impacto a largo plazo de la enfermedad.

En Specsavers Ópticas ofrecemos exámenes visuales completos, en los que se revisa la salud del ojo y se utiliza la fotografía digital de retina para observar más de cerca los vasos sanguíneos de la parte posterior del ojo. Si se producen cambios en estos vasos sanguíneos, puede ser un signo de retinopatía diabética. Gracias a nuestros exámenes visuales, hemos podido derivar para su diagnóstico y tratamiento a muchas personas que no eran conscientes de que tenían diabetes, por lo que apoyar a esta fundación parece ser el siguiente paso lógico.

Hi, I’m Michael Olsson, optical assistant at Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar and I am taking on the challenge to bungee jump between two bridges in Mascarat to raise funds for the charity DiabetesCERO.

I’ve been working up to this with hikes, mountain climbs and via ferrata routes, and kept wondering what it would feel like to fall. Rather than let that stop me, I’ve decided to face my fear and pledge to take on the only bungee jump to take place between two bridges in Spain, for a wonderful cause which is very close to my heart.

I will be jumping from 60 meters and experience a 40-meter freefall, before swinging between the two bridges. I will be jumping with Alicante Aventura, a fantastic company that I’ve used many times for activities and trust.

The company I work for, Specsavers Ópticas, has signed an agreement to fundraise for the charity DiabetesCERO throughout 2024, to help them find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. They aim to raise over €5,000 for the charity, to fund important research projects in Spain searching for a cure.

Through my bungee jump, I want to raise €1,000 towards this total on behalf of the Specsavers Ópticas stores in Guardamar, Torrevieja and La Zenia. Being able to raise money for an amazing cause while I do it is a real motivation to face the fear and take that leap of faith!

Raising funds for diabetes research is very important, and something which is very personal to me, as a member of my family suffers from it and I’ve seen the effects that diabetes can have on a loved one. The great work the charity is doing deserves to be better known, and I want to raise awareness not simply of diabetes, but what can happen to sufferers further down the line if the condition is not properly controlled.

Diabetes is not just a glucose or insulin issue, it can cause so many more problems and sadly we’ve seen that in our family. The more funding that can be put into research into finding a cure and improving treatment, the better. Spreading the word of the impact of diabetes on your health is also so important, as early diagnosis and treatment is crucial to reducing the long-term impact of the condition.

We do our bit at Specsavers Ópticas to offer complete eye tests, which check the health of the eye and use digital retinal photography to check the blood vessels at the back of the eye. If changes occur in these blood vessels, it can be a sign of diabetic retinopathy. Thanks to our eye tests, we’ve been able to refer many people for diagnosis and treatment, who weren’t aware that they had diabetes, so supporting this charity seems to be a logical next step.
