1. WHAT HAPPENED?
Hello, my sister Cristal Anderson had a Pulmonary Embolism on June 29th which created numerous cardiac arrests.
My mother called 911. Paramedics showed up and while they were trying to get Cristal on the gurney she has another cardiac arrest.
Paramedics did CPR right away, which also cracked her ribs in the process of saving her life. As they worked on her for about 20 min to get her heart stable enough to move her into the ambulance.
They loaded her up into the ambulance and on their way to the Hospital Cristal had numerous cardiac arrests and coded. Her heart would just not start back up. The paramedics continued to revive her until she got to the hospital.
Overnight at the hospital, they were able to get a CT scan to figure out a blood clot was in her lung which caused the heart issues.
Cristal was on an ECMO machine aka Life Support, for 6 days which helped take pressure off the heart and the body to let all the organs relax. The machine did all the work so the body could heal. She was also hooked up to a ventilator to help her breathe and had 10+ IVs giving her fluids.
Cristal's heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and brain had a large percentage of being damaged from all the trauma. Fortunately, everything in her body does not have permanent damage but it is going to take months to heal.
Cristal also had a trachea to help her breathe with the ventilator, a feeding tube, and a temporary pacemaker.
She was a high risk for asphyxiation and was not allowed to drink any water nor keep her mouth swabbed with moisture for over 20 days because her lungs are compromised from any fluids.
Cristal was in extremely critical for quite some time.
2. WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS?
At the beginning, we were battling the insurance company to get Cristal approved to go to a LONG-TERM ACUTE CARE FACILITY. The insurance company had denied several times Cristal's much-needed care to get her the medical help and physical therapy she needs. We sent appeals and the insurance company was demanding more unnecessary tests to even think about approving her.
A LONG-TERM ACUTE CARE FACILITY is a hospital specialing in treating patients requiring extended hospitalization.
The head doctors of the cardiac hospital were advocating for Cristal to go to Long-Term Care because she needed this medical help for a very long time and would be the quickest way to get her back to living her life. Luckily, the long term care finally got approved.
