PUMA Global Capnography Project Fundraiser
The Project for Universal Management of Airways (PUMA) is dedicated to encouraging consistent airway management practice independent of geography, provider discipline or context. In addition to developing guidelines, PUMA provides education and supports other initiatives to achieve this goal and improve safe and effective patient care during airway management.
The Consensus guidelines for preventing unrecognised oesophageal intubation developed by PUMA and the international Airway Societies recommend that capnography should be available & used for all episodes of airway management where feasible. Unfortunately this essential monitor is rarely available in low resource settings.
The Global Capnography Project was established to evaluate and improve access to the equipment and training required to use capnography to prevent critical airway incidents. In the six months following a pilot project distributing 40 capnographs to eight hospitals in Malawi, Africa, anaesthesia providers reported recognising 44 episodes of oesophageal intubation through use of capnography that would otherwise not have been available. Read more about the Global Capnography Project here.
All donations received by the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists from this fundraiser will be directed to further the efforts of the Global Capnography Project to provide equipment and training to close the 'capnography gap' and improve patient safety during airway management in low resource settings.
