Pushing For Palsy

Hi All,

As some of you may be aware, a few short months ago my now 12 month old daughter Lucy was diagnosed with mild Cerebral Palsy, affecting her right side due to a haemorrhagic stroke in utero. We first noticed stiffness in her right side that was not present on her left. While trying to find out what was wrong, this stiffness worsened. Fortunately for us, we were able to find the right people and get a diagnosis relatively early on. Having very little idea about how to move forward with this information, we were told about the wonderful people at the Kids+ Foundation here in Geelong.

Based in Geelong, Kids Plus Foundation was founded in 2003 by parents of children with special needs, therapists and concerned community members in response to the gap in access to quality and regular goal focused therapy for children with cerebral palsy, stroke or brain injury. Kids Plus provides specialist physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech pathology services.

The Kids Plus therapy program has always been focussed on providing specialist programs for young people with neuro developmental disabilities in order to increase their participation and engagement in daily life.

The Kids+ services are mostly funded through the NDIS however for families like us, who have an early diagnosis, the process to gain access to NDIS funding can take quite some time. Knowing how important the first 18 months -2 years of life are developmentally, Kids+ provide their services at no cost to families through fundraising activities and grants from the philanthropic community.

With the amazing progress that my Lucy has made over the few short months working with Kids+ I want to show my appreciation, as well as make sure that these services are available and can grow for other families that may need their help in the future.

So I have decided to run a stupid number of kilometres (21.1 to be exact) while bringing Lucy along for the ride in her new running pram (Bumblebee), and hopefully raising money and awareness for the work of this extra special foundation
