St Marks Gas Truck Restoration
Donation protected
Purchased by 6 students in 1966, the St Mark's College Gas Truck (more affectionately known as the 'Gassie') has travelled the distance with many memories made along the way.
From the 'Burke & Wills Society trips to regular visits to Western Australia, the Gassie has certainly left its mark on the college community.
In 2005, Gerard Millar and his team at 'Marque Restorations, along with the help of a number of collegians reconditioned and repainted the Gassie to its timeless glory. However, in 2012 the Kew series engine started to fault and the Gassie was visibly tired. To be fair, the early 1940's engine was coming to the end of its life.
The regular load of students and a BBQ trailer meant the Gassie could no longer bear the work.
We were fortunate enough that 'Marque Restoration' had a later Kew series engine sitting out the back, waiting patiently.
Due to the uniqueness of the vehicle, there was without a doubt some challenges along the way. Thankfully they were overcome due to the support from Gerard and his team. The Gassie returned to service just prior to the 2013 O'week.
Thanks to donations in previous years the vehicle has had a big profile at most of the past year's college events, with the commencement of its roadworthy registration in 2020 allowing the college icon to move students to and fo sports.
However, as with many historic and unique vehicle's there comes regular maintenance and servicing costs.
The funds raised for the 'Gas Truck' will go towards:
- Rust-proofing the chassis.
- Restoring function of handbrake.
- Fixing tailgate (currently has rust moving through the back panel).
- Replacing door and window trims.
- Reupholstering front seat + adding rear cushions.
- Full transmission service and vehicle check.
- Servicing/maintenance + fuel costs.
There is only a handful of these vehicles still remaining within Australia and even less still travelling out on the roads. Help us to restore the 'Gassie' back to its great days and continue to remain a joyus icon of St Marks.
Past memories are today’s stories, while today’s moments are tomorrows memories.
