"New Braunfels is growing, you need a bigger shelter!" We hear this all the time and it really isn't true. An animal shelter should be a 'hotel', not an 'apartment complex' - designed for short stays with all the creature comforts!
We get pretty creative here at HSNBA and during this year's "kitten season" (going on NOW!) we converted a store room into a "cat-ernity ward" for momma cats and their newborn kittens and tiny kittens waiting for foster homes that need a little extra attention during their stay. We set up some tables, some carriers and wire crates and viola! 6 - 8 new kennel units!
However, as May turned into June and now July is staring us in the face we have found this is FAR from ideal. Some of the kittens are so small, they can slip through the bars of the wire crates. The large plastic carriers are really hard to clean, especially with kittens whose grasp of the litter box is minimal to say the least. Using crates like this is also a really poor use of space and in an attempt to prevent the transmission of germs, we cover all of them with sheets. This makes it hard to do a quick check on our charges to make sure they are all doing well, and it must be pretty dull for them as well!
HSNBA has come really far in the last few years and we are proud of the progress we have made, for the animals AND the organization. We are in a better place financially than we have been in a decade but the cost of new kennels (about$5000) for this room is just something we don't have right now and we don't want to wait. Can you help us out?
