Pygmy Child Care in the DR of Congo (J893N)

Despite closing of schools and restrictions on gatherings of 20 or more people in the DR of Congo, the children in Mubambiro Pygmy Village  at St Mark’s Centre still have a daily meal of porridge and are going home with locally made bars of soap.

Australian Barbara Rose Ferguson published a book on her unique experiences in the remote and war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo. Over ten years she formed precious relationships with women who had survived unimaginable brutality and found a new passion in life in working for a band of destitute and despised Pygmies. This is an authentic account from someone who has spent a lifetime working, researching and teaching in the field of international aid on the front line in two war-torn countries, and eight years in one of the most troubled parts of the world involved with arguably the most disadvantaged people in the world: Pygmies.

All royalties from the sale of her book below go to Pygmy Child Care through Global Development Group (project ID J893N):

Barbara's speaking engagements to raise funds are cancelled for an unspecified time, so any donation to the Pygmy Child Care Centre will help.

Right now, Pygmy Child Care needs our help more than ever. Funds are needed to start a soap making project, where the locals can start using soap to protect against Covid-19, and sell to villagers in the area.

There is a simple wooden apparatus which can produce a quantity of soap overnight.  The basic ingredients for the soap are lye, palm oil and a blue dye, and all are relatively easy to obtain locally.  A hut for the production is required in the early stages.

Once the basic process is mastered, there would be the possibility of diversifying, making a soap with the addition of essential oils such as eucalyptus for greater antibacterial properties and lemon for a scented product.

The restrictions on movement now make this an ideal time to select and train a small group of youth to participate in the pilot.

"With humor and humility, Dr Barbara Rose Ferguson shows what people can achieve when led by their conscience. Don't Look Away! transports us to the heart of humanitarian action and the complications of working in a war zone. Inspirational for those who want to make a difference."   Dr Michael Nest, Award-winning author of three books on Central Africa.
