When I was 8 years old I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease because my two kidneys did not grow large enough and I was told that I would eventually need a kidney transplant. My dad requested at work that we be transferred to Boston, MA since this place had some of the best hospitals and doctors to help me get better and healthier. Boston Children´s Hospital has a reputation for being one the best pediatric hospitals in the US and in the world.

After 3 years of being diagnosed, in August 2020 we received the news that there was a donor so they transplanted a new kidney in me, everything went smoothly and I was working towards my recovery. However, after a year with the new kidney at age 12, during a routine ultrasound, the doctors discovered a small mass in my new kidney. After several studies and surgery to remove the portion of the kidney that had the tumor, that little ball doctors discovered was a very rare and aggressive cancer, Renal Medullary Carcinoma, that came from the deceased donor and our nightmare had begun. RMC is so rare that there is no specific treatment to treat it and has a very high mortality rate.

After our doctors consulted with other specialists in different parts of the country to determine the best treatment option to follow, I started receiving chemotherapy for 6 long months during which I started losing my long hair and had some other side effects, it was a very difficult time for all our family. I could not understand why God had allowed this great blow in my life.

After the chemotherapy was over, several studies didn´t find any remaining tumors, however, doctors advised removing the entire kidney and it was too much of a risk. So I was once again, in the operating room to have my new kidney removed and it was sent for analysis. I immediately started receiving dialysis. The pathologist found a tiny remaining malignant tumor on the outer fat surrounding the kidney, how it got there? Doctors still cannot answer that question.

Since this is a very aggressive cancer and it grows so quickly, it was recommended that I follow radiotherapy every day for 6 long weeks right after my dialysis. Before starting this new treatment, they had to remove one of my ovaries because the radiation would be applied to all of my abdomen, affecting my stomach, intestines and other organs and there was a risk that I could become infertile. This radiotherapy was even worse than chemo, the radiation affected my organs in such a way that I was unable to eat any food because my stomach couldn't tolerate anything so they had to feed me with a nasogastric tube using a machine that I still use to this day because my stomach has not fully recovered and I suffer from frequent nausea and vomit because it cannot yet digest food properly.

I can't wait until I can eat normally again.

In the beginning, I did not understand everything that was happening in my life, we came to Boston Children's with the hope to have a better life and everything turned for the worse. My parents, my brother and I have unfairly suffered for something that was not our fault, something that was not supposed to happen but it still did. My mother had to quit her job so she could take care of me and take me to many doctor visits, exams, chemo and radiation sessions that it became a full-time job. During this time, my mother, who also suffers from chronic kidney disease, had to start her own dialysis treatment and it is very difficult for her to find time for a job with all my treatment, her own and the many visits we have to do to have to with the doctors.

My dad is the only one who works at the moment and the truth is that life in Boston is too expensive for us and the rent is too high that it doesn't allow us to pay our entire bills. Our medical insurance covered most of the costs, however, there are still many expenses, deductibles and copayments that we still need to cover. Boston Children's is charging us $10,000 for noncovered expenses, Dana Farber Cance Institute is charging us $4,400 for deductibles and the ovary removal procedure was not covered by the insurance, which was $1,000.

I have to be cancer free for a year until I can be a candidate to receive another transplant, which won't happen before September 2023.

For these reasons we ask for your support and your good heart to be able to pay the debts of my treatment that we have not been able to pay. Thank you very much for all your help and support and I hope to God that I will soon recover my health completely, thank you for your support!

Cuando tenía 8 años, me diagnosticaron una enfermedad renal crónica porque mis dos riñones no crecieron lo suficiente y me dijeron que eventualmente necesitaría un trasplante de riñón. Somos originarios de Zacatecas, México, y mi papá solicitó en el trabajo que nos transfirieran a Boston, MA, ya que este lugar tenía algunos de los mejores hospitales y médicos para ayudarme a estar mejor y más saludable. Boston Children´s Hospital tiene la reputación de ser uno de los mejores hospitales pediátricos de los EE. UU. y del mundo.

Después de 3 años de ser diagnosticada, en agosto de 2020 recibimos la noticia de que había un donante por lo que me trasplantaron un nuevo riñón, todo salió bien y estaba trabajando para mi recuperación. Sin embargo, después de un año con el nuevo riñón a los 12 años, durante una ecografía de rutina, los médicos descubrieron una pequeña masa en mi nuevo riñón. Después de varios estudios y cirugía para extirpar la porción del riñón que tenía el tumor, los médicos descubrieron que esa masa era un cáncer muy raro y agresivo, Carcinoma Medular Renal, que provenía del donante fallecido y nuestra pesadilla había comenzado. La RMC es tan rara que no existe un tratamiento específico para tratarla y tiene una tasa de mortalidad muy alta.

Después de que nuestros médicos consultaron con otros especialistas en diferentes partes del país para determinar la mejor opción de tratamiento a seguir, comencé a recibir quimioterapia durante 6 largos meses durante los cuales comencé a perder mi largo cabello y tuve algunos otros efectos secundarios, fue realmente un tiempo muy difícil para toda nuestra familia y en especial para mí. No podía entender por qué Dios había permitido este gran golpe en mi vida siendo tan chica :'(

Después de que terminó la quimioterapia, varios estudios no encontraron ningún tumor remanente, sin embargo, los médicos recomendaron extirpar todo el riñón ya que era demasiado riesgoso. Así que estaba una vez más en el quirófano para que me extirparan el riñón donado y lo enviaran a analizar. Inmediatamente comencé a recibir diálisis. El patólogo encontró un pequeño tumor maligno restante en la grasa externa que rodea el riñón, ¿cómo llegó allí? Los médicos todavía no pueden responder a esa pregunta.

Dado que éste es un cáncer muy agresivo y crece muy rápido, me recomendaron que comenzara un tratamiento de radioterapia todos los días durante 6 largas semanas justo después de mi diálisis. Antes de iniciar este nuevo tratamiento, me tuvieron que extirpar uno de mis ovarios porque la radiación se aplicaría en todo mi abdomen, afectando mi estómago, intestinos y otros órganos y había riesgo de que quedara infértil. Esta radioterapia fue incluso peor que la quimioterapia, :'( sufrí tanto que solo recordar siento escalofríos y es muy doloroso cada que lo recuerdo ya que la radiación afectó mis órganos de tal manera que no podía comer porque mi estómago no toleraba nada, así que me tuvieron que alimentar con una sonda nasogástrica usando una máquina que todavía uso hasta el día de hoy porque mi estómago no se ha recuperado por completo y sufro náuseas y vómitos frecuentes porque aún no puedo digerir los alimentos adecuadamente.

No puedo esperar hasta que pueda comer normalmente de nuevo :)

Al principio no entendía todo lo que estaba pasando en mi vida, vinimos a Boston Children's con la esperanza de tener una vida mejor y todo empeoró. Mis padres, mi hermano y yo sufrimos injustamente por algo que no fue culpa nuestra, algo que se suponía que no debía suceder, pero aun así sucedió. Mi mamá tuvo que renunciar a su trabajo para poder cuidarme y llevarme a muchas visitas al médico, exámenes, sesiones de quimioterapia y radiación que se convirtió en un trabajo de tiempo completo. Durante este tiempo, mi madre, que también sufre de enfermedad renal crónica, tuvo que iniciar su propio tratamiento de diálisis y es muy difícil para ella encontrar tiempo para un trabajo con todo mi tratamiento, el suyo y las muchas visitas que tenemos que hacer y tener que ver en muchas citas con los médicos.

Mi papá es el único que trabaja en este momento mi hermano estudia la Universidad y él me apoya mucho con mis tantos cuidados que mamita y yo tenemos y la verdad es que la vida en Boston es demasiado cara para nosotros y el alquiler es demasiado alto que no nos permite pagar todas nuestras cuentas. Nuestro seguro médico cubrió la mayoría de los costos, sin embargo, todavía hay muchos gastos, deducibles y copagos que aún debemos cubrir. Boston Children's nos está cobrando $10,000 por gastos no cubiertos, Dana Farber Cance Institute nos está cobrando $4,400 por deducibles y el procedimiento de extracción de ovario no estaba cubierto por el seguro, que era de $1,000.

Tengo que estar libre de cáncer durante un año hasta que pueda ser candidato para recibir otro trasplante, lo que no sucederá antes de septiembre de 2023, pero confiamos en Dios que pronto me darán la hermosa noticia de estar oficialmente libre de cáncer, mi mami quien es la que más fe tiene en Dios sabe que así será.
