In July 2017 I was diagnosed with AML. Acute Myeloid Leukaemia is an incurable blood cancer.
Typically, Life expectancy is 3-5 years if diagnosed early. I am now into year three.
Why am I setting up a Go Fund Me Page?
There are clinical trials being conducted in at least fifteen locations throughout the world including Australia trying to find a cure for this blood cancer at this time.
I want to be in a position to take advantage of any opportunity that is available or offered to me if it is going to prolong my life. New advances in the treatment of cancer happen constantly, I want to be here to take advantage of any opportunities. This is the reason for my sons, my partner Jan O'Brien and I setting up this Go Fund Me Page.
My Story
I was first diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2017 by my Haemaotologist at the Gold Coast University Hospital in Queensland.
Since then I have received constant treatment at the Gold Coast University Hospital and The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.
My initial treatment was one month in the Gold Coast University Hospital undergoing intense chemotherapy treatment which is both dangerous and very unpleasant.
Over the next three months I spent two periods of two weeks in hospital following more intense chemotherapy.
During this treatment period I was advised that the best solution for a prolonged life for me would through a "Bone Marrow Transplant". To achieve this I needed to find a suitable bone marrow donor. Siblings are the most likely match.
I have six siblings and all willing to be my donor. After medical testing, sadly and to our shock and disappointment, none were a match.
Step two was to access the world Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
There are twenty- nine million registered. Sadly none of these were a match.
Why were there no matches for me? The answer I was given by the medical experts was
"It's your Polynesian Blood"
I decided to solve this problem and make a difference by creating a movement called Rugby vs Leukaemia, an initiative to encourage people to become blood donors, especially those of Pacific Islands Heritage with Polynesian bloody types.

Giving blood saves lives. I am living proof. Without constant blood and platelets transfusions, I would not be here today. Give blood please.
My treatment started at Gold Coast University Hospital and following the chemotherapy treatment I was found to be in remission in early 2018.
During the first half of that year, I was introduced to and was treated by a Polynesia natural healer who I found to be of tremendous benefit to me mentally, physically and spiritually. I have continued to see this gentlemen on subsequent visits to my home land New Zealand.
By June 2018 I had fallen out of remission and had bleak prospects until I was offered a place in a clinical trial at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. I have spent the last fourteen months commuting to Melbourne every month for treatment.
I believe that treatment has now stagnated and I have been offered a place in a similar Clinical Trial at The Gold Coast University Hospital which I have accepted and will enter Hospital in early August to begin my treatment, which will in the first month be very intense and invasive, but hopefully help me survive a few more years.
Recent tests have shown that my cancer has increased.
Time is now very important to me.
Acute myeloid Leukaemia is a very difficult blood cancer to treat. I will remain positive and hope and pray for a positive outcome.
The financial impact on my partner Jan and myself over the last three years has been significant.
We would love our lives to return to normal.
My partner Jan has been my full- time carer since I was first diagnosed with cancer.
She has carried a heavy burden and has been wonderful support for me. We are a strong team.
We hope with the support of our friends we can lead as normal lives as possible and also be prepared for any opportunity for treatment wherever that may be.
Giving blood is special.
