Emergency Relief Fund

Hi, my name is Tammy Roberts and I am the Executive Director of Home Base YK, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving and supporting homeless youths aged 12 to 24 in Yellowknife. Our mission is centered on leaving "No Youth Left Out." We are currently facing a critical situation as Yellowknife undergoes an evacuation due to a wildfire, and we are determined to ensure that our vital services continue uninterrupted.

The safety and well-being of our homeless youth, many of whom are Indigenous, remain our top priority, even during these challenging times. We have evacuated from Yellowknife, NT to Zama, AB, where the remote nature coupled with its tranquility, allows us to offer a safe haven where our youths can find respite from the stress and uncertainty of the wildfire situation.

In addition to providing essential support, we are deeply committed to preserving and nurturing Indigenous culture within our programs while continuing to deliver them remotely with local resources. We recognize the importance of maintaining a strong connection to cultural heritage as a source of strength and identity for our youth. Despite the challenges posed by the evacuation, we are continuing to incorporate cultural activities, teachings, and practices into our daily routines. Through storytelling, traditional crafts, and sharing of wisdom, we are working to create an environment that honors and uplifts Indigenous traditions.

To sustain our operations and preserve these vital cultural connections during the evacuation, we are launching an emergency relief fund campaign. This fund will not only enable us to maintain our services but also empower us to continue these culturally enriching activities, ensuring that every young person in our care, regardless of their background, receives the attention, care, and assistance they need.
