Help Susanne Marie Recover, Rehab, and Restore

Hi, Sarah here. I started this Go Fund Me because Susanne Marie needs our help.

On Saturday, 8/12, Susanne was in a devastating car accident. She sustained multiple serious injuries requiring surgery, and will be in a wheelchair for at least three months.

Will you be a part of helping her get back on her feet (literally) again?

~What Happened~

The accident took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when an uninsured driver in a truck sped through a red light, and plowed into the car Susanne was driving. Her dear mother, Ingeborg, was in the car as well. Thankfully, both were wearing their seatbelts and the airbags were deployed.

The car was mangled.

Later, workers at the salvage yard would be shocked to learn there were survivors in this crash, based on the state of the car.

Ingeborg sustained a concussion and bruising. But Susanne received debilitating injuries.

Rendered unconscious at the time of the accident, she has no memory after the truck hit her car except for this: As Susanne was coming in and out of consciousness, a sweet man held her hand in blessed comfort, telling her the ambulances would be coming. Susanne’s response?

“I have a dog at home.” Many of you know of she and Nala’s sweet bond. Thankfully she was not in the car.

Susanne’s loving companion, Fred, has been a rock throughout this ordeal, keeping on top of a million and one details, including caring for Nala and Ingeborg.

~Her Injuries~

Susanne has multiple zone 2 sacral fractures, and several pelvic fractures (iliac left wing, right superior ramus, and right inferior ramus). She has multiple fractures to her left ankle and heel, and several broken ribs . A concussion, damaged dental work, a misaligned jaw, and whiplash are the least of her concerns right now, but the totality of her condition leaves her unable to work, walk, or care for herself fully for the time being.

~What’s Next~

Once released from the hospital, she needs to move out of her home and into a wheelchair accessible apartment. No weight bearing for three months - she cannot stand or walk. After three months in a wheelchair, she will begin to walk again, using a walker, and the next phase of rehab begins for some months. After not using her legs for so long, the rehabilitation will be extensive. It may be at least 6 months before she can resume any kind of life as she knew it, and even then, we don’t know the long term effects of such injuries.

She cannot attend to her work. Her upcoming 7 day retreat at Vajra Vidya has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for a date in 2024.

With your support, we are hoping she can truly focus on recovery, and get back to doing what she does so well: supporting people.

~A Light Through It All~

Despite the severity of her trauma, here is what her companion Fred said about Susanne in the days following her accident: “She has an inner glow and calmness to her that’s rare in this world, and she has not lost that for a single moment. It’s an inner light that cannot be extinguished, and is amazing for me to behold.”

This is the Susanne we know and love. She holds a light in the midst of challenges, including her own.

~How You Can Help~

Your generous donations will help defray the costs of such a big undertaking. Susanne is going to need daily support for an extended amount of time. Insurance will only cover a portion of the home health care she will need, with the rest coming out of pocket immediately. She will need help with meals, showering, laundry, shopping, errands. And of course, her income has come to a halt. She will not be ready to begin working again for some time.
