Funds for Frida
** Update 24th June 2021
Frida has come such a long way and we are nearly through this. She can walk short distances and doesn’t really notice her limitations. I just need to buy her a stroller for longer walks and I have some ongoing costs with medication. **
Overnight on Sunday 17th January, Frida started yelping when she moved and couldn’t walk properly on her back legs.
She was initially misdiagnosed on the Monday, as having only hurt her back muscles but by Tuesday she couldn’t move her back legs at all. We were then referred to specialist vets Anderson Moores near Winchester and she was diagnosed with Grade 4 IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease).
The disease occurs when the intervertebral disks, the shock absorbers between the vertebrae of the spinal column, bulge or burst, becoming herniated.
Unfortunately, I had to discontinue Frida’s insurance last year because it became too costly and their cover reduced to such an extent that it was no longer financially viable (other insurance companies would only insure her with multiple exclusions, including her back).
The treatments for IVDD are hugely expensive. An MRI and surgery alone can cost around £8000. There would then be weeks of physiotherapy to pay for afterwards.
Due to my financial situation, I have decided not to go down the surgery route but conservative treatments, including physiotherapy and hydrotherapy are still hugely expensive.
We are hoping for Frida to be under the care of Greyfriars Rehabilitation Centre for as long as possible for these treatments.
I hate having to ask people for money but this is the only chance that Frida has to regain the use of her legs. It’s not guaranteed either but I will do everything I can for her. She is my world and she deserves the chance to continue to live a happy life.
