Qatar: Free Manuel (Catar: Liberen a Manuel)

Hello, I am Manuel Guerrero and I am a British / Mexican citizen living in Qatar. I consider myself a self-enthusiastic and caring individual and passionate about everything I do. I have worked 25 years in the airline industry and I am not ready to slow down. I also would like to share that I am gay and live with HIV.

On the 4th of February, I fell into a cruel trap set by the Qatari police. Undercover police created a fake profile on one of the gay dating apps. After arranging to meet, I was arbitrarily detained when I was getting off the elevator on the ground floor of my residential building.

In the police unit, I saw multiple detainees being whipped by police officers to obtain 'confessions'. I was threatened with being whipped if I did not sign multiple statements in Arabic. I remained incommunicado for more than 48 hours and mentally tortured to reveal the names of other members of the LGBTQ+ community in Qatar. I was 38 days without a without a lawyer or a translator. I was tortured and subjected to cruel and inhuman treatment for 42 days by the police in one of the detention centres in Qatar. Withholding or delaying my HIV medication was used as a way of torture throughout the time I spent in prison (for those who are not familiar with the medical condition, I need daily medication to stay healthy). I was also forced to live in overcrowded spaces with extremely poor hygiene conditions, subject to constant verbal abuse including homophobic remarks and discriminatory behaviour due to my HIV status and without access to any physical or recreational activities amongst others.

Currently, I have been temporarily released and allowed to continue my legal process outside of prison. However my battle is far from over. I now face a road filled with legal and financial obstacles, with my livelihood and freedom at stake. My current employer (Qatar Airways) stopped paying my salary and any social security obligations; the government has canceled my bank accounts and cannot provide my regular HIV medication.

Today, I would like to appeal for your contribution. Your contribution would allow me to support my legal representation, fund my repatriation expenses and pay for my HIV medication since the Qatari government and my current employer have prevented me from leaving the country, continuing working or finding a new job. Hola mi nombre es Manuel Guerrero soy un ciudadano británico y mexicano viviendo en Qatar. Me considero una persona entusiasta, cariñoso con mi familia y amigos y apasionado por cualquier cosa que decido emprender. He trabajado más de 25 años en la industria aérea y aún tengo mucho que dar. También me gustaría compartir que soy gay y vivo con VIH.

El 4 de Febrero, caí en una trampa cruel tendida por la policía de Qatar. Elementos de la policía encubierta crearon un perfil falso en una de las aplicaciones de citas gay. Fui detenido arbitrariamente cuando bajaba del ascensor en la planta baja de mi edificio habitacional.

En la unidad de policía me obligaron a presenciar como muchos detenidos que eran latigados por la misma policía para obtener sus supuestas confesiones. Yo fui amenazado de sufrir el mismo castigo sino firmaba múltiples documentos en árabe. Permanecí incomunicado por más de 48 horas en las cuales la policía me torturó psicológicamente para que revelara el nombre de más personas de la comunidad LGBTQ+ en Qatar. Estuve 38 días sin abogado y sin traductor. Fuí torturado y sujeto a tratos crueles e inhumanos por 42 días en uno de los centros de detención de Qatar. El acceso a mi medicamento para el VIH fue utilizado como un método de tortura. La mitad del tiempo en prisión me fue negado y la otra mitad suministrado de manera irregular después de rogarle al personal de la prisión por su acceso (para aquellos que no conocen el tema, necesito tomar antiretrovirales todos los días para mantenerme sano). También me obligaron a vivir en espacios sobrepoblados e insalubres, constantemente sujeto a comentarios homofóbicos y trato discriminatorio por mi status de VIH y sin ningún acceso a actividades físicas o recreacionales.

Actualmente me encuentro en libertad provisional mientras continúa mi juicio. Sin embargo mi lucha está lejos de terminar. Ahora, enfrento un camino lleno de obstáculos legales y financieros, con mi sustento y libertad en juego. Mi empleador actual (Qatar Airways) dejó de pagar sus obligaciones salariales y de seguridad social, el gobierno ha cancelado mis cuentas bancarias y no puede proveer mi medicamento.

Hoy me atrevo a pedir tu ayuda. Cada gesto de solidaridad me permitirá pagar los gastos jurídicos, de repatriación y mis antiretrovirales para seguir combatiendo el VIH ya que el gobierno y mi empleador me impiden salir de Qatar, seguir trabajando o buscar un nuevo empleo.
