Karter's Cancer Crusade with DIPG
Donation protected
Please help Karter, Richard & Nicole as they navigate through this most difficult time.
Karter began experiencing symptoms at the end of June 2022 and was initially diagnosed with Bells Palsy. Things quickly pivoted on July 25th, and he was taken to the hospital and immediately admitted. A scan and an MRI revealed every parent's worst nightmare: Karter was diagnosed with a DIPG brain tumour.
- These tumours are located in the center of the brain stem (on the pons), affecting the nervous system.
- This cancerous growth cannot be operated on due to the location and is terminal with a 10% survival rate of 2 years.
- The only treatment available is numerous rounds of radiation to combat the aggressive growth rate of this kind of cancer.
- This type of tumour afflicts only children between ages 4-11.
- THERE IS NO CURE
Karter is only 5 years old. The doctors have told us we have between 2 months-2 and years left with this little guy.
No family can be prepared for such a prognosis. We are asking for help with finances to help cover medical bills, time off work for both Nicole and Richard and everything in between to help him live the best life he can while they can spend as much time as they have left together as a family.
He was at the Stollery, but has been discharged. In mid-August he will be completing his 31 radiation treatments as an out-patient at the Cross Cancer Institute here in Edmonton. He is in the capable hands of the amazing staff and will receive the best medical treatment available.
Updates will be posted as they occur.
We appreciate any help you are able to offer. All we do ask is to give Richard, Nicole and our family the space to process what is happening.
On behalf of our family - We thank you for your support.
