Tony’s Medical Bills

Last year January 2022 Tony diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer. And lesions in the liver and colon nodules. Did intensive radiation treatment. Followed up with 10 chemotherapy treatments and tablets throughout the rest of the year.

He soldiered through. Early this year scans revealed liver lesions no longer there. But the rectal tumor still active.

Doctors advised this a small window of opportunity to operate to render him cancer free. Alternatively to go home for palliative treatment as further chemotherapy was not an option .. as his markers indicate he had plateaued.

Dr said he ticked all the health boxes. A good candidate for the ileus surgery.

After surgery... it went downhill from there. He was one of the "unfortunate 10%" to fall under the bus on surgical complications..

A week or so after the first surgery a 2nd one needed to be done for ileus blockage and draining of pelvic infection. .

He got ileus paraylsis ..

Another week later emergency endo sponge therapy was started to curb the pelvic infection.. as he continued to get sicker!

Going from crisis to crisis..

He has now been in hospital 5 weeks ..

A 'routine surgery' at which he got 'unlucky' and he and his family have suffered through.

And he is a long way from recovery.. still further surgery later in the year in the hope to reverse the ileus ..

At the recommendation of his medical aid society he came to south Africa for treatment. The medical aid has long been exhausted!!..

Borrowing from friends and family to pay the medical costs..

Once we back home will consider selling our home to cover costs...
