Joyce H's post-brain surgery recovery

SEE UPDATE

Our friend and colleague, Joyce H., had surgery on 1/24/19 to remove a golf ball sized tumor in her brain.   Surgeons were able to remove 90% of the tumor.  Doctors are optimistic and reports indicate the tumor was benign, however she will need to continue monitoring and testing of the region.

On 2/12/19 Joyce had 31 stitches removed from the surgery and she returned home on 2/13/19 with what Joyce calls her "new coif." She jokes that new style will be complimented by wide headbands for the foreseeable future.  Joyce was also able to retrieve her beloved pooch, Niki, from the kennel that cared for her during Joyce's inpatient stay.

During this phase of Joyce's home-based recovery she will receive help from in-home nursing and physical therapy.  Between appointments and treatments, which can be very taxing, she will spend her other free time resting or getting around her with a walker.   After a couple weeks, her physical therapists will determine when she is ready to resume driving. At that point she will be required to take a driving class designed for those recovering from similar medical situations before she is allowed back on the road.

We have set up this page so friends and colleagues who are interested in lending support can do so.   Joyce mentioned she has been very blessed with help from friends and family in many areas, such as coordinating appointments, help running errands, and arranging food for her specific dietary needs.  As a single person, finances during this time off work are particularly tight. She could use additional help with funds for the following specific needs:

1) Off-setting the cost of Niki's kennel fees
2) The cost of the driving class

If preferred, she can also use gift cards to Jewel Osco and Petsmart. Those running errands for her can use these to help with buying her groceries and dog food.  Any gift cards can be given to Izzy, Sara, Leslie, or Sharon at Joyce's work and we'll make sure they are mailed to her.

Joyce usually spends most of her time helping others in her job as a crisis counselor.  We've set the giving goal at $1000, but any amount (smaller or greater) that we raise will make a big difference as we help Joyce.

Thank you!
