Teri's Medical Fund

Teri started having occasional abdominal pain in December 2013. After several rounds of failed antibiotics for what was thought to be a "bacterial infection", her doctor decided an EGD was necessary. On January 10th 2014, our lives changed forever.

Teri was diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal cancer, more specifically a very aggressive and rare large cell neuroendocrine tumor. After finding out this devastating news, we were told to go straight to see an oncologist for an appointment they had set up for us the same day.

Teri started chemo and radiation right away. Next was an esophagectomy on June 27th, 2014, where they removed a portion of her esophagus and reattached it to her stomach. She spent a few days in the ICU and then a few hard days on the medical floor. During her hospital stay, we named her tumor “Earl” and decided he HAD to die (Dixie Chicks =) )!  Teri went through so much and was so strong. We couldn’t have been more proud of the obstacles she overcame.

In September 2014, Teri had a scan which showed her cancer had returned, this time to several different areas, including her head which causes excruciating pain for her.

Fast forward to now, and she has had more radiation and has been undergoing chemo every 3 weeks. As you can imagine, this is very hard on her. She has remained a trooper throughout and can often be found outside gardening and working hard.

We (Teri, her daughter, her granddaughter, and a good friend of Teri’s) have made the decision to travel to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. They have a new radiation therapy that was introduced this summer and is exclusive to that location. Because of Teri’s insurance; MD Anderson and Cancer Centers of America are not an option and would be completely out of pocket. While Mayo Clinic is covered by her insurance, it will still require us to pay for travel, food, and hotel expenses. So far we are scheduled for two days of appointments at the end of August, but we were informed that there is a possibility that we will have to stay over the weekend and come back Monday. That being said, we are staying a minimum of 4 nights. We are also planning on driving because we will have a baby on board, which will get expensive.

In one lifetime; Teri has lost her newborn son, her husband, and now is dealing with cancer. Now she is happily married with two kids and a new grandbaby. We hope that by doing this, some worry will be taken away from her and she can focus on being strong. Teri is our hero.

Asking for help is hard, but medical bills pile up quickly and this trip will only add to those.  Any amount will help, and if all you can afford to do is pray, we appreciate that more than you know as well.

Thanks and God bless!
