Screenwriter Seeks Tuition for NYU

Donation protected
Thank you so much for taking the time out to read this! It is really embarrassing for me to ask for money like this, but I have been accepted as a transfer student to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Rita & Burton Goldberg Dramatic Writing Program! They only accept three or four transfer students into the program each year and I was lucky enough to be one of them.  However, I cannot afford the tuition. The financial aid package (including student loans) that I received from the school will leave me owing the school about $40,000 in tuition for the upcoming school year. $20,000 per semester. There is no way that I can come up with it on my own, so I am trying to raise the first year's tuition here. I only have until May 16th to make my decision!

I am a financially independent student who went back to school after a long time in the workforce. I've applied for student loans but was denied because I don't have the best credit. I applied for some major scholarships, but didn't end up receiving them. As a poor college student who has been accepting food stamps for the last few years, there is no way that I can come up with this amount of money on my own.

I'm a playwright and screenwriter whose goal is to bring the stories of the oppressed to the stage and the screen. This is the only school that I have wanted to go to since I decided to go back to school. The program is in the heart of the theater and independent film world, and the professors are world class. It will really help me to hone my craft and focus on writing every single day. This program specifically will give me access to the industry and legitimate prospects and connections for work upon completion. This is the same program that Donald Glover, Annie Baker, and Kenneth Lonergan went through (three of my favorite writers). It is also where Oskar Eustis teaches. I need to go here!

I will be transferring from College of the Redwoods, where I am graduating with my A.A. and a 4.0 GPA on May 11th. I am the President of the school's Black Student Union, and one of its founding members. I have won several Northern California literary awards for poems that I have written in the last two years. My play "A New Day" was performed at the PortFringe Festival in 2014, Asbury NJ's The Black Box, and the Playwrights on the Rise series in the same year.

What's most important here is that I am a dedicated revolutionary writer in the tradition of August Wilson and Amiri Baraka. I write about the racist, patriarchal, capitalist realities of America and the world. I aim to bring the stories that haven't historically been seen, and bring them to the stage and the screen. At this juncture, in this time and place, I think that it is of the utmost importance that these voices are heard.

As a black person living in America, it is extremely important to me to get my education, as my ancestors were killed for trying to get one.

If I exceed my goal, any extra funds will be used for housing/books/moving/next semesters tuition.

If I do not reach my goal, I will be going to California State University, Northridge, and will use any funds made to help with tuition/housing/moving/offsetting student loans. I'm about $4,000 short in this area.

I would be so appreciative for any help that you could give even if it is just sharing this with friends, thank you!
