Help the Clements Family

Please allow me to bend your ear for a moment to share about a family that is very near and dear to my heart, and has found themselves in a very difficult situation.
Carter Clements has been one of the most influential people in my life. He was an attending physician where I trained during residency at Highland General Hospital Trauma Center in Oakland California. Carter was enormously impactful in my development as an emergency physician and as an empathetic human being. He was my role model, my mentor (sometimes tormentor), my counselor, and he became my very close friend. In short; Carter is one of my real life heroes. In my eyes, the dude has always worn a cape! Every resident cherished his sage tutelage, calm demeanor and deeply caring heart. As an impoverished young trainee, I especially enjoyed his post-shift “liver rounds” that he would sometimes treat us to at a local watering hole. The camaraderie that our staff developed after a stressful Emergency Department shift, was palpable, and much of it was facilitated by Carter. He is one of those rare people that I have chosen as a family member. This is why I am so troubled by the current struggles that he and his family are having.
Carter and his loving wife, Julia, have been unable to work since before the pandemic due to health issues. Carter was being treated for bladder cancer and Julia was suffering from spinal and nerve issues requiring multiple surgeries and resulting in disabling pain that left her mostly bed bound for three years. It is now very unclear if either will be able to return to work again, as Carter has just been diagnosed with rectal cancer. They find themselves financially strapped, struggling to stay afloat, with bills mounting and a daughter in college. It is not easy to ask for help, especially for someone who has always been a “giver”, but I’ve been allowed to reach out with the hope of finding some relief.
It breaks my heart to see someone in this situation who has dedicated his entire life to helping others, has personally saved a tremendous number of lives and has relieved untold suffering. He has also indirectly benefited countless of others; by proxy, with the hundreds of residents that he has trained to be superb physicians over the years.
I am blessed to know a lot of great people and I hope that some of you might be willing to assist the Clements through this Go Fund Me account. Anything that you could spare would be greatly appreciated. If there was anyone deserving of a little payback for a lifetime of accruing good karma, it is Carter and his family!
Thank you for your consideration.
