Research Project: Colorism and Christianity
Donation protected
Hello. My name is C.W. Dawson, Jr. I am an ordained minister and the first African American to receive a Ph.D. in Philosophy in the history of the University of Missouri-Columbia. I am currently working on a research project involving Colorism and Christianity in North America.
Colorism, a term first coined by Alice Walker, is the preference for white and light skin over dark skin. Colorism is ubiquitous in scope as people of color experience it worldwide. Colorism is both an implicit bias and an explicit bias. It is not racism per se but intricately grounded in racism.
It is well documented that Colorism has affected every socially constructed institution in American society. The influence of Colorism on the cosmetic industry, the criminal justice system, the housing industry, employment, social justice, and education is without question. What is in question is whether Colorism has affected and is affecting Protestant Christianity in North America? This question will be the central analysis of the project. The historic Black Church and the traditional and evangelical White Church will be part of the investigation.
Funding to complete this project is beyond my financial means. However, the cost of recording equipment for interviews, books, travel expenses, etc., demands that I launch this fundraiser. This research is essential, and I need your support.
The project will examine available data and interview Black and white clergy and laity. In addition, I intend to present public lectures on Colorism and Christianity and publish a book on the subject upon completion of the project. I need your support. Donations of any size will be appreciated.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and thank you in advance for your financial contribution.
