Around Christmas time, Daddy noticed a strange, small, lump on his left leg. By March, it had tripled in size and he underwent his 1st surgery to have it removed. The doctors removed a 7cm tumor from his thigh. On April 3rd 2015, we received the devastating news that Daddy had Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a RARE and highly aggressive form of skin cancer.
We spent the next few months visiting multiple doctors who ran multiple tests but were unsure on what course of treatment we should pursue due to the rarity of Dad’s type of cancer. Most of them had never even dealt with a case of it before. We spent countless hours doing research to find the best specialists for his type of cancer. We finally discovered the University of Michigan has a clinic that specializes in Merkel cell carcinoma.
After reviewing all Dad’s test results the Dr’s in Michigan dealt us another blow. The cancer had spread to his neck. Daddy would need another surgery to remove lymph nodes from both his left thigh and his neck. Mom and Dad traveled to Michigan on July 29th for pre-op and Dad’s surgery on August 5th. Dad spent 10.5hrs in surgery where they removed 11 lymph nodes from his thigh and 61 from his neck! All of the lymph nodes in the thigh were negative for cancer!!! But 15 of the 61 from the neck tested positive for cancer cells.
Dad has been referred over to a Dr. at Cedars Sinai for follow up and continued treatment. In the coming months Daddy will be undergoing localized radiation, 5 days a week for 6 weeks, starting in September, in hopes to kill any pesky cancer cells lingering around. The doctors all seem very optimistic that this would be the final course of treatment and that Daddy would only need to undergo a body scan every few months for the next few years to ensure there is no new cancer cells.
Needless to say months of tests, doctors appointments and surgeries has taken a financial toll of our family. Daddy’s the main provider for our household of 9! While we’ve all been pulling together to keep things running the mounting medical expenses is catching up with us. As a self-employed businessman Dad doesn’t have any kind of disability or financial assistance while out of work.
We are working on hosting a few fundraisers over the next few months to help with the piling medical bills and bills that are to come, but if for any reason you are unable to attend any of the events, anything is much appreciated. What we request the most is for your prayers for Daddy’s continued healing and recovery.
