Jill's feral cats..help to TNR
Donation protected
She was a first time mother with limited options. She is a beautiful longhaired calico cat. The problem is that she is feral. She has no loving owner to spay her and give her a warm , safe home. She knows no human contact except for the kind man who puts food out every morning for her and the rest of her colony. At some point in her lineage there was a domestic cat and a home. But for this cat and her 4 newborns there was a shallow burrow at the base of a tree. She had to hunt and fight for the man's food to feed herself and her kittens. Her kittens froze before anyone even knew they exsisted. The kind man realized that she was repeatedly going to one spot and went to check. He found the kittens. He was the only one who cared that they had lived and died.
Over the next several weeks this scene will be repeated with slightly different scenarios and different outcomes for over 100 cats living in feral colonies in Port Jervis NY and the area.
When I spoke to a neighbor in the local Shop Rite she told me that she was feeding 13 ferals. 10 were last summers kittens. I approached the new PJ/Deerpark humane society shelter manager and told her of the situation. Her problem was 2 fold....1st feral cats are seldom adoptable so they couldn't come to the shelter. 2nd we both agreed that euthanizing them was not an option. So we decided on a Trap/Neuter /Release program as long as someone was willing to feed and monitor the colony. The shelter is providing cages/traps, know how, transportation, and a warm safe place for a night or two in cold weather.
I found a "Feral Cat Friendly " veterinarian who will do the surgeries and give a rabies shot for $60/cat.
I need to raise the funds for the program as the shelter is working out of a 1959 facility and extensive work needs to done there.
Through the generosity of individuals and businesses, Mabel's cats are safely back home but unable to reproduce. Then I spoke with Milt (he's the kind man feeding Momma) We have 10 cages inplace for his colony right now but there are soooo many more. The trailer park has maybe 20......Gene has 3.....and so it goes.
Please help me help the cats, and the folks who provide them with food and shelter but don't know how to deal with the problem of ferals. I love cats.....have served on the humane society board in the past. I was a veterinary technician. Thank you for anything you can do to help me get atleast 100 cats taken care of this year. It will so help to cut down on the homeless kittens.
