Bring Eve Tushnet to Steubenville
Recently, Franciscan University of Steubenville student organization Students for a Fair Society invited Eve Tushnet, author of "Gay and Catholic: Accepting My Sexuality, Finding Community, and Living My Faith" to speak on campus about how "every sign of unjust discrimination [against LGBT persons]... should be avoided" (CCC 2358). Though Eve steadfastly holds to the Catholic Church's teaching on celibacy, she was deemed too controversial by the school's administration to speak to students, primarily on the grounds that she identifies as a lesbian. Many students both in and out of the organization were upset by this; thus, us concerned students have arranged for Eve to come give a presentation and book signing at BookMarx Bookstore in downtown Steubenville on Thursday, April 23rd. Unfortunately, Students for a Fair Society's budget for this talk has been revoked. This is where we need your help. To cover travel expenses, food expenses, and a personal stipend, we must raise approximately $410.00 before her arrival. Eve's voice and perspective is much, much needed by the community of students at Franciscan University. Any donation, no matter how small, would be a tremendous help towards acheiving our goal. Thank you for your consideration!
Here's a breakdown of the costs:
Roundtrip flight from DC to Pittsburgh - $260.00
Extra travel expenses - $20.00
Food for Eve - $30.00
Minimum Stipend for Eve - $100.00
Any money raised over our goal will go to Eve.
Edit (4/9/15):
The university has asked me to make it clear that Students for a Fair Society is in no way able to sponsor this booksigning. Thus, it is simply an independent initiative put together by students NOT in a recognized club.
Also, due to unforseen circumstances, the date of the talk has changed to Tuesday, April 21st. The flights for this change in date are more expensive - instead of $260.00, we'll now how to pay approximately $350.00. Fortunately, this won't be a problem, as you generous donors have provided us with more than enough money for this! :)
