Intensive Care Unit New cross Hospital
Hi All
I am looking to raise money for the ICU department by doing a sponsored walk. The aim is to walk the Snowdon Masiff. (Crib Goch, Carnedd Ugain, Snowdon)
This is why i chose the ICU department.
November 28/11/23 my wife decided i should go to New cross A&E after 2 days of feeling ill. whilst being assessed i collapsed and was taken to ICU and put on to life support. Doctors expected me to be in an induced Coma for 48 to 72 hours but due to my condition where i had partial multiple organ failure due to invasive Strep A, Streptococcal Toxic shock Syndrome, and Sepsis i was in the coma for 2 weeks. All the staff worked tirelessly hard to save my life putting me on dialysis numerous times for my kidneys and drains for my lung to help with the infections, also supporting my Wife and family through our darkest days. After multiple times trying to wake me, they decided to carry out a tracheotomy to regulate my breathing and cause me less stress as i was fighting the tubes in my mouth. After this procedure was carried out, the first attempt to wake me was successful, unfortunately my lung had not recovered so they took me to theatre for a minor 30 minute operation which turned into a major 4 hour operation where they had to cut my rib to peal off a hard crust infection that had developed around my lung. The operation was very successful and although i still had my ups and downs it was a major turning point in my recovery.
I would also like to mention all the staff on ward B8 who also helped with my recovery, made me smile and laugh when i really didn't want to.
my life changed dramatically that day, going from being Fit and Healthy to having to learn to walk, eat and talk again.
My recovery is far from over so this walk will be very challenging to me so 2 friends Morgan and Tom have agreed to walk alongside me to push me on and keep me safe.
I plan to walk on 16/06/24 weather permitting which will be 6 months from me waking up from my coma.
All donations small or large would be very much appreciated
