Mt Kilimanjaro - Mountain Workers Support Fund
Donation protected
The Ask:
We want to raise £100,000 to support the mountain workers of Kilimanjaro.
Tourism has stopped in the country due to Covid-19. Tourist aren’t likely to return to the mountain for the rest of 2020. We are asking the international community to support the Kilimanjaro Mountain Workers until tourists can return in 2021.
Watch our video above and please give what you can.
Why we’re doing it:
In 2016, I was hired as a filmmaker by the Mayo Clinic to make a short documentary about a medical research expedition to the summit. The Mayo Clinic’s aim was to discover more about the effects of altitude on the body. It was during this 10-day expedition that I became friends with my porter Loy Justin. Loy was hired to carry my second camera bag to the summit and was such an excellent companion along the way. I’ve stayed in touch with him since the trip, he informed me of the current situation in Tanzania and I was inspired to try and help.
The funds will be donated to Kili Treks, the company who organised the logistics for the medical expedition. Kili Treks has over 100 mountain workers on its roster. By donating to this fund, you are not only providing support to 100 mountain workers, but to the livelihoods of 100 families. The money raised will be used to support the guides, porters and cooks of Kilimanjaro who have lost their incomes as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
What will result:
The funds will be used for food supplies, medical treatment and to launch and support small scale farming and agriculture run by the mountain workers. This will in turn provide sustainable incomes until the tourists are able to return in 2021.
The porters have supported so many charity mountain climbs over the years. It’s now our chance to give back.
If you would like to donate please do so below.
