Last month I had a friend Jonathan Otto send me pictures of people affected by famine, closer examination in the region, there are pictures of people who have died of starvation. He showed me the extent of famine and shared what was happening throughout Africa. This impact on people and the suffering to children horrifies me in a world that we live in today. The fact that we now live in a world of excess, yet this famine does not occur because of a lack of food, because food is available in this world, and in this country, but it was for lack of love; more importantly a lack of urgency to act.
Last week I booked flights into East Africa. I booked a ticket to Kenya and I will be on the ground this Friday. I've been briefed on the current operations, my role is to examine if there is a better process for farming and review project improvements to the current operations and assist where I can in the management of operations. I have long held an affinity for the people in Africa and am pleased to be joining Jonathan Otto, his wife Lori and the team to see the fulfilment of that vision. I will be a volunteer, and helping to examine what improvements will be needed and identify new locations for similar operations. We will have three people on the ground volunteering.
Ill be here three weeks. The team have been consulting with the locals here as to where the most affected regions and individuals are. We will be seeing the work of groups making a difference, as well as reporting the needs to communicate to the world how we can turn the tide in these affected regions. We believe that the use of evidence based systems and process improvements in famine relief is the avenue to create microeconomic reform. This will resource those affected regions that will help to change the future for these people. In short, providing a self sustainable model for the future.
Last month Jonathan visited, one of the 3 village communities, he asked if they had any cases of people that you fear will die from hunger. They were kind enough to not point to themselves but start pointing to each other. They brought him 18 women that were skin and bone. The two women stretched their arms out to me and said, through his translator, 'feel my arms and my hands. I'm not sick with a disease. I am dying because of starvation. Thank you for your support and the support of your friends, but please assist us more'.
One of these women showed her belly in the pictures and her back and the pictures I've seen. I have never felt so sick in my stomach that I thought I was going to throw up. The impacts of lack of food in this region is affecting every child and woman in the region.
By taking action we can create a community based model that can have such an impact as to change the way we manage famine. This model empowers people and puts pressure to governments to live up to it's promises as they see the spirit of love. We need to show these people that the world has not forgotten and we are not going to let them suffer and die.
As many of you know I've travelled to some of the poorest communities and poorest nations in the world. I can honestly say, Ive seen how they live. Some of the photos I can't post on here the level of famine and the impact to human life; children who have died of starvation. I have been indifferent to the suffering of people I don't know so often in my life but I allowed myself to look into this and I can't help myself from having the tears well up inside of me and realise that we can do something very small to support communities. That this is human life, people had no choice where they were born. But we have choice on how to act.
Still love is only known through action. Please share this message, and please help to get the word out.
I'll be giving updates and getting the word out on the contribution those are making to help make history. This region is part of the largest famine in world history. People knowing about you raising your hand just inspires them to raise theirs. But remember we've got to act fast. If we don't do something we're about to see to see much worse things. It gets even harder when it's young children.
Please consider making a decision to make a difference today by supporting the team Jonathan, Lori and I, for these precious people in Kenya through this mission. All money raised, 100% will go to seed and fertiliser!
Help spread the word!
Cheers Joel
