Support Medical Workers In Myanmar's Crisis

Campaign to Support Medical Workers in Myanmar’s Crisis Through
Humanitarian and Development Foundation for Myanmar

Myanmar lost its democratically-elected leaders and government in February 2021 in a military coup that continues to imprison, torture and kill those officials whose political opposition parties were dissolved. The military continues to arrest all other voices of the opposition calling for democracy among its citizenry. The most prominent of these voices was “Generation Z” who launched street protests for two months before many either fled abroad or to safe areas controlled by various ethnic armies in Myanmar. Much of the early momentum resisting the military coup was led by healthcare workers in urban hospitals, universities, schools and clinics who walked off their jobs and started a civil disobedience movement.

In 2023 the Myanmar military junta - a brutal dictatorship - intensifies and escalates its horrific war against unarmed citizens with air strikes, torching, and battalion attacks targeting schools, churches, villages, towns, clinics and hospitals in locations in rural Myanmar. The UNHCR records that more than 500,000 internally displaced people continue to flee Myanmar military forces. 20,000 have been detained and unofficial estimates put the total death toll of citizens - armed and unarmed - at 15,000 including those tortured and murdered in prison.

A recent shocking example of Myanmar military atrocity and barbarism was an air strike that occurred on April 11, 2023, at the start of the Burmese New Year Holidays. A festival performance by non-combatants at Pazigyi village in the Sagaing region was intentionally targeted and bombed, followed by shootings from military helicopters. 178 people including 40 children were killed. The youngest was 6 months old. The military accused villagers of being “terrorists”.

Additionally, Myanmar Junta launched multiple air strikes at Kayah and Sagaing regions recently.

Medical personnel and volunteers continue to treat casualties in dangerous circumstances all over Myanmar, imperiling their safety and most often without proper medications and supplies. As armed resistance becomes stronger, the military becomes increasingly ruthless and targets more and more civilians, including humanitarian rescue and recovery medical teams. The scarcity of critical care life-saving supports - EKG, X-ray machines or even sterile medical instruments, and pregnancy kits, tourniquets, medications and plasma etc - translates to casualties becoming inevitable fatalities.

Healthcare in rural areas is provided by voluntary healthcare workers who themselves fled from the military. Most healthcare is improvised in abandoned hospitals or makeshift buildings of bamboo and tarpaulin in the jungle with rudimentary medical supplies provided by small donations from local people sympathetic to anti-military sentiment.

International NGOs - MSF, WHO, UNICEF, Save The Children et al - have limited or nonexistent ability to travel outside of large cities to provide care for populations at risk.
