Quaama Bushfire rebuild fund
Donation protected
On the morning of 31 December 2019, the Badja Forest Rd fire raged through the communities of Quaama, Upper Brogo, Verona, Puen Buen and Pipeclay on the far south coast of NSW Australia. 70 homes were destroyed and many more properties were badly damaged. Our photo shows our "wall of safe" that we used to let friends and neighbours know we were okay while none of us had power or any phone communication after the fire.
3 months on, the clean up has started and many people are returning to the properties they love, setting up temporary living arrangements in tents, caravans, sheds and combinations of these while they continue to work through the trauma of the firestorm and work to start picking up the pieces of their lives.
This fundraiser will continue the work of the Quaama Bushfire Relief Centre by supporting specific projects that will help bushfire victims living in temporary arrangements to live comfortably, securely and warm as we head into winter.
Our first project will provide weather and vermin proof storage shelves suitable for small areas. These cost $140 each to produce and are made at no cost by a local woodworking group. These units are practical and functional and will be useful in pantries, studios, workrooms and sheds once their current use is over.

We have funding to produce 22 of these units and want to raise enough to provide one to every household returning to their properties in our area. If funds allow, we can extend the offer to surrounding communities including Cobargo, Yowrie, Wandella, Cooligalite and beyond.

Quaama Bushfire Relief Centre has been working hard to support the community by providing food, clothing, tools and other donated items since 5 January 2020. Alongside the provision of needed things, the Centre supports people as they navigate the confusing and sometimes overwhelming process of accessing support from governments and NGOs. The Centre operates as a drop in space where the bushfire affected can have some time out, catch up with neighbours and friends and work within the community to solve problems and plan.

Our relief fund has been accepting donations since late January with the money used to support people to access whatever it is they have need most at the time. We've bought needed items like wheelbarrows, cleaning supplies, garden tools, hot water bottles, small amounts of fencing supplies, fresh fruit and vegetables, bird netting, potting mix, work gloves, hoses, brooms and rakes. We've given funds to people to repair burnt bridges and purchase tanks full of water. The more we raise, the more help we can provide to people immediately and specific to the need they have on any day.
As time moves on and needs change, the Centre will continue to support our community with well-being focussed activities, classes, workshops and gatherings and further assistance as homes are rebuilt and gardens regrown. We will also create opportunities to gather as a community and enjoy life again.
Please help us continue rebuild our homes and our community.
