When Guillermo Garcia (known affectionately to his friends as Guille) left Milwaukee, WI on December 7th for his homeland of Argentina in his van, many tears were shed as we wished him well. We knew he was going on an adventure that would present many challenges and unexpected obstacles, but we also knew that Guille's personality, wit and ingenuity would get him through whatever the journey would throw his way.
So far he has successfully navigated border crossings, dead-end dirt roads and uncertain nights. Through Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama he has safely moved towards his target arrival date in Argentina in early June 2020. His travel visa is currently scheduled to expire then. After arriving in Colombia a few weeks ago, that country just announced it is closing its borders due to the global Coronavirus pandemic. This travel restriction in and out of that country is expected to last a minimum 3 months and he is not sure when he will be allowed to move on.
Right now Guille's immediate future is uncertain as he travels to the Argentinian embassy in Bogota, Colombia to update his paperwork (and pay more money to extend this travel visa), hopefully get some answers and make plans to hunker down for the next several months. In the meantime, he is quickly running out of resources to pay for gas, food and other necessities. Despite Guille's multitude of talents, abilities and tangible skills, Colombia is an extremely poor country that relies on tourism. It will likely be at an economic standstill within days or weeks, leaving him with few options for obtaining temporary employment.
During these unpredictable times we want to make sure our dear friend is safe and avoids extreme hardship for several months while in anticipation of eventually continuing his travels home.
