Help Quare Dance: The Ballet Get to California

Quare Dance: The Ballet is coming to life, and we need your support to make it happen. We have 10 more days to reach our fundraising goal of $10,000!
I am honored to be a featured choreographer at the 2023 Queering Dance Festival in Berkeley, CA. For this occasion, I am transforming four years of research into my dream ballet, Quare Dance!
Quare Dance deconstructs and reimagines ballet through the lens of Black Queer subjectivity, offering a fresh perspective on what ballet is and can be. The ballet combines movement, text, and adornment to explore the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality. Through a series of solos, duets, and ensemble dances, the performers journey through themes of assimilation, self-realization, and self-reclamation while challenging dominant narratives on dance and Black, Queer identity.
Where you come in:
We are raising $10,000 to bring Quare Dance: The Ballet to life. The money covers the cost of a living wage, travel expenses, lodging, and costumes for my brilliant collaborating artists Lee Edwards, Kiara Felder, Alexandria Johsn, and William B. Fowler Jr.
Why now / Why this is important:
It has taken four years to find the right opportunity to make and share Quare Dance: The Ballet. In our current social and cultural climate, spaces like the Queering Dance Festival and artistic works like Quare Dance are of the utmost importance. As we speak, governments across the country and around the world are working to erase the presence and histories of Black and Queer communities.
Even with the systemic and persistent threat of violence against us, our communities, my communities, are resilient. Quare Dance grows out of these rich legacies to resist erasure and expand visibility for Black and LGBTQ+ communities.
