Help us open a QUEER CAFE!

Help us open a sober queer cafe in Edinburgh!
Hi everyone, our names are Oskar and Zak, two young gay guys based in Edinburgh, and we’ve just taken on the roles of co-managers/owners of the Greenwood shop and cafe in Bruntsfield!
We had been talking for a while about how there is a lack of specifically queer-friendly, sober spaces in town for queer people to meet up and partake in a variety of activities. Then we saw on social media that the Greenwood was available for new management, and leaped on the opportunity.
Once we saw the space, we fell in love with it and immediately saw the potential it had for our ideas. We want to turn it into an even more cosy and vibrant space upstairs for people to enjoy a warm drink, a smoothie, a pastry, or a delicious vegan meal. There will also be shelves selling pieces by local queer artists, as well as fairtrade teas, chocolates, and more. Downstairs, we have a basement space which, despite its low ceiling, will be turned into a cosy art gallery and a space for activities such as guided meditations, film screenings, tarot readings, book clubs, and so much more! This area will be central in building the community spirit of the new Greenwood. We also want to make the point of providing a space for queer people under 18 who miss out on the social space of nightclubs due to the presence of alcohol and everything that comes with it.
We’ve been so grateful for all the love and support that’s been sent our way for this idea, but we need your help for the final steps in making this space the best it can be! We will need to do a whole lot of work before we officially take over management in September, including getting various new licences, cooking appliances, security systems, insurance, extra stock, furniture, and more.
Our £1,500 goal is indicative of just above the minimum that we’d need to cover everything, and if we go beyond our goal we’ll be able to do even more! We also have some fun little rewards for certain amounts donated:
£5 - get the chance to be one of 15/20 invited to our preview party on Thursday 3rd September
£10 - previous reward, and a free coffee/tea/hot chocolate
£20 - previous rewards, and a card giving you 10% off activities and workshops for a year (1 activity a week)
£50+ - previous rewards and an extensive tarot reading in our gallery/activity space
Please put your name on your donation otherwise we cannot reward you!
We recognise how difficult these times can be, but if everyone within our network donated just £1 each, we’d be well on our way to reaching and going beyond our goal, enabling us to make this space even more special than it already is! And even if you can’t donate, please give it a share on social media and spread the news!
Thank you all so much. We can’t wait to show you what we have planned.
Love love love,
Oskar and Zak
