Queer Families Covid-19 Relief Fund
Tax deductible
Undocumented and mixed-status families, like queer families, are disproportionately suffering and in need of COVID-19 Relief.
On March 27th, a $2 trillion stimulus package was signed into law. In the package was over $600 Billion dollars in relief to individuals through unemployment expansions and stimulus checks.
Of the $600 Billion dollars allocated to individuals across the U.S., NONE was allocated to undocumented individuals, or to mixed-status households. These families have been left out of this much-needed aid in our shared time of crisis. In 2015 alone, undocumented immigrants paid $13.6 Billion dollars in Federal Taxes. These individuals and their families contribute to the fabric of our society every year in vast quantities, and yet they cannot access a single dollar in federal funding during this time of crisis. Many are disproportionately at risk of contracting COVID-19 as low-income essential workers. If infected, many face larger hurdles towards medical attention as a result of their lack of healthcare access. Others who are unemployed as a result of this crisis cannot apply for unemployment benefits. THEY HAVE NO SAFETY NET, AND THEY ARE PUTTING THEMSELVES ON THE FRONTLINES FOR US!
Queer families and community members are also more at risk during this time of crisis. The pandemic and the economic disaster that follows it are a perfect storm targeting LGBTQ homeless youth, undocu-queer people, and queer individuals overall who are disproportionately impacted by poverty, and unemployment. Those that are in mixed-status families, homeless youth, or undocumented themselves will not qualify for stimulus checks. Many of the organizations and shelters where these at-risk communities were previously receiving support are now closed or stretched thinner with higher demand.
The Latinx History Project has worked with the Queer Latinx Community for almost twenty years. We hear the needs of our communities, and we are asking you to help us act now! We are trying to raise $120,000 to distribute to local partners across the country who will get these funds into the hands of families in need right now.
If 1,000 people donate $120 dollars each from the stimulus checks that the government has sent out, we can help 200 families get $600 across the U.S. This would mean money for food, shelter, and medical expenses for sick loved ones. 1,000 x $120 = $120,000
