Description:
Welcome, everyone! We are Trent Nakamura (dir.) and Mara De La Rosa (writ.), two Asian American LGBTQ+ filmmakers who are about to embark on a new short film together! We have been making films together since we first met at OutSet: The Young Filmmakers Program in 2016!
We are about to begin our SEVENTH film together entitled QUEERFULLY DEPARTED. Before we start, we need your help to make Queerfully Departed a reality!
Log line:
When Mimi Pascual dies in the middle of a hysteroscopy, she is greeted by a queer archangel, who reveals that her soulmate is the doctor who accidentally killed her. As Mimi realizes that she hasn't done much of what she's wanted to do in life, she fights for a second chance, because for her, it's a matter of life or death.
Why This Story:
From the Writer:
I was inspired to write this film after my gynecologist told me I had to undergo a hysteroscopy because I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). She wanted to scrape a sample off my uterus to make sure that there wasn’t anything cancerous. I was terrified but also very distracted by how hot she was. Here I am lying on a table, thinking that I could die without being the best lesbian I could be! This motivated me to write a comedy about an awkward lesbian who accidentally dies and begs her queer archangels for a second chance at life! This story can remind people not to take life for granted. Sometimes life throws a series of unfortunate events at you, and in the end, all you can do is laugh, so why not laugh?
-Mara De La Rosa
From the Director:
Queerfully Departed reminded me that we truly never know when our last day will be. As a filmmaker who has overcome multiple health traumas: kidney disease, a splenectomy, & IBD, I can say with confidence that I strive to live each and every day to the fullest. Mimi’s journey in the film, along with Mara’s quick-witted humor and imagination, reminded me of some of my favorite comedy television shows and movies, but with a queer twist. Building off my past comedy work and experiences, I am thrilled to bring Mara’s words to life and share Mimi’s journey in the afterlife with the world.

What this Story Means to Us:
Queerfully Departed at its core is about living your life to the fullest! It encourages you not to shy away from who you really are, take risks, and never take life for granted. What makes this special to us, is that it’s told from a queer & Asian perspective; dashed with fantastical characters that involve gay angels, one of which being THE Amelia Earhart.
Why You Should Donate:
Without our community, who knows how lost we would be! Queerfully Departed is an endorsement in reaching for the things we want in life, even if it takes risks. Our journey as filmmakers reflects this belief in striving to be our best selves. The film is a romantic comedy at its core, with characters bursting with heart and a belief in the power of love.
