"Space is Silent" - Junior Advanced Project

Donation protected
As Juniors at the Johnny Carson School of theatre and film, we are tasked with taking the skills we've learned in our first two years at school and concentrating them into making a 6 minute short film over the course of the semester. This is no small feat. Planning, preparing, and executing every step of the filmmaking process can take months. Getting a jump start on the process is critical, which is why we are starting before our Junior year has even begun.

Our film is called "Space Is Silent"

SPACE IS SILENT follows CASSIE, a bright young woman ready to embark on her journey as a college student. She has just graduated from high school, and is preparing to move away from home. Her younger brother GUS, who is deaf, is scared and nervous for her to move away. She has been his rock, his best friend and makes Gus feel important, even when he feels like a outsider.

Along with copious amounts of time, making a film takes money. These costs can come from a variety of different things. One of our biggest expenses is hiring an interpreter. We felt that it was only right to cast an actual hard of hearing person in the role of Gus not only by principle, but from an ethical standpoint. Plenty of times before, deaf roles have been stripped away from hard of hearing actors and given to able hearing actors. We did not want our film to fall into that category. So the young actor playing Gus is actually hard of hearing, and his primary way of communication is through ASL or American Sign Language. This means that we need to hire an ASL Certified interpreter to be on set at all times, to ease communication between our actor, his mother, and the rest of our crew. Because of the limited number of people who are certified to translate ASL, interpreter fees can run high (for good reason). Most of our production budget will go to fairly paying our interpreter. Other production expenses include paying for our location, food, and potential gear rental.
