Goal: To show support and appreciation for the class of 2020, to raise money for our sisters and brothers struggling during these times, and to hopefully raise enough money for a couple scholarships for “selfless” seniors who exhibit great kindness.
How/When: By fundraising for the LA Emergency COVID-19 Crisis Fund by doing a 20-mile run/20-mile bike ride on June 11, 2020, graduation day for our Palos Verdes High School seniors.
Course: We will start at 8AM in South Redondo, run to the Redondo/Hermosa border, then to Golden Cove, back to South Redondo. The bike ride will be a straight shot from South Redondo to the Ladera Linda turn on PV Drive and back.
Who: As of now, myself and DJ Hill, my friend, colleague, assistant coach, and someone I consider a brother. But anyone is welcome to join in and do their own physical challenge (biking 20 miles, exercising for 20 days in a row, etc.—you can come up with your own challenge)
What: Let’s get to $5,000. $1,000 in scholarships, $4,000 for the LA Emergency COVID-10 Crisis Fund which gives:
· Relief for Healthcare Workers
· Critical Healthcare Equipment
· Services for our Unhoused Neighbors
· Support for Families and Small Businesses
Why: “Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look out not only for their own interests, but also for the interests of others.” –Phillipians 2: 3-4
This is God’s plan, and not mine. I will cover this in my journals on my blog. I know we don’t all share the same faith, but it is important to me for all to know I did not come up with this. God charged me to do this so that we may rally together, knowing that there are many causes all worthy of being supported right now. We are all sisters and brothers and should be stepping up for the ones who need help the most, during these trying times.
Qualification for the scholarships: Peers (PVHS students, currently enrolled or one year into college), will write essays, from 200 to 1,000 words, about a 2020 graduating senior on how that senior defines kindness and selflessness. Please be certain the student you are writing about knows you are celebrating them and their work.
Winners will be selected by a panel of PVHS staffers. We will at least be able to give out 2 $500 scholarships to deserving kindhearted seniors.
E-mail essays to: [email redacted]
Deadline for essay submission is June 8th, 2020 at 11:59PM
Winners will be announced on graduation day, June 11th, and will receive a $500 check to be used at their discretion.
Disclaimer: This is not an officially sponsored Palos Verdes High School event. However, we have been given the go-ahead to run the event as stated here.
God Bless,
Derek
